1. Sopa del Día

    from Hayley Larson / Added

While traveling is an excellent way to explore the world, studying abroad allows you to immerse yourself in a culture and live with people who have differing views and perspectives from yourself. It is through this kind of experience that our eyes are truly opened to who we are as people, sharing this planet together, regardless of our cultural differences or continental boundaries. If there is any way to achieve peace among nations, it is through positive interactions like these. We tend not to fight with our friends, and that is who we become to one another by studying, learning and living together. Music: "Roll Away Your Stone" by Mumford and Sons

The phrase: "Como la uva no es vino, la hoja de coca no es droga" translates to "As the grape is not wine, the coca leaf is not a drug." Generally, this can have many different meanings along the vein of "things are not always as they appear to be." Specifically, it embodies a contradiction to a common misconception that many people in the world have about something they know little about. After falling in love with a place and its people, I came home to find this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd2pc363OP4 on the news. This film is a critical self-reflection of, and an expression of gratitude for, my time spent studying abroad in Peru. It was made without any premeditated organizational structure; instead, this took shape through four weeks spent editing 3 year-old footage in the Milne Library Digital Media Center at SUNY Geneseo. Created through moments of embarrassment, self-loathing, regret, and somehow humor and excitement, this film represents part of something I couldn't even begin to express in words. If some parts of the film feel as if they drag, remember this is intended- and what thoughts that arise in mind are a mixture of reactions to what you see based on what you've already learned. At times we see and experience the world long before it makes any sense, and this is an attempt at doing just that. Knowing full well that this is an imperfect film rife with typos, lacking classification, and at times discontinuous, please overlook all that and appreciate sights and sounds that may be strange and unknown to you. I hope you enjoy what you see, and please feel free to comment or constructively criticize.
