The leaves have fallen in rural SC, but Dec. 1st promised to be a warm day so I took my Hornbeck canoe for a paddle on Turkey Creek in the Sumter National Forest. I know, I know...don't paddle alone, always wear your PFD, etc. The Stevens Creek gauge (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv/?site_no=02196000) read 2.5' which was supposed to be enough, but for future reference don't believe it. I wouldn't try it below 3'. Anyway, I put on my orange shirt so if someone shot me I'd know he did it on purpose, then I headed out. I mean really, I must be a 10 year old boy trapped in a septuagenarian body. Here's a few minutes of an admittedly boyish adventure.

        • Spring at Fall Creek

Fall Creek is located in the Sumter National Forest in northwestern South Carolina and flows into the Chattooga River. The creek features three small waterfalls of which I only was able to find two. There was lots of low light on this outing which really taxed my camera’s capability. Detailed information about Fall Creek can be found at http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/fallcreek1.htm Shot in June 2012 with a Panasonic HPX170. Edited with Edius 5.5 and encoded with TMPGEnc 4 express. Station Cove is located on the eastern edge of Sumter National Forest near Walhalla, South Carolina. A decent trail parallels the creek for about 3/4 mile and terminates at the base of Station Cove Falls. This area is lush with plant and animal life. Human impact seems to be minimal. This is one of the cleanest trails I have been on. Again, low rainfall was a bit of an issue. It has been several years since some of these streams have had a consistent healthy flow. Directions to the falls can be found at http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/station_cove1.htm Shot in March/April 2012 with a Panasonic HPX170, Igus slider, and Glideshot jib. Edited with Edius 5.5 and encoded with TMPGEnc 4 express. Music “Glimmer of Hope” by Luke Richards which is licensed for use from Audionetwork.com.

Yellow Branch Falls is located in the Sumter National Forest just a few miles northwest of Walhalla, SC. It was recommended to me by fellow Vimeo member Rich Stevenson. I waited until after a couple of rainfalls before visiting the park in hopes of a decent water flow but it was only marginal at best. It was a long hot hike with heavy gear, but I think it was worth it. More infomation about the falls may be found at http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/yellowbranch1.htm Music by Frozen Silence (Childhood) and licensed for use under Creative Commons by Attribution. Shot in June 2011 with a Panasonic HPX170 at 720/60P using custom scene files and edited with Edius 5.5.
