What squeezes a giraffe? In this case and place, greenhouses do. From Hell's Gate to Lake Naivasha in Kenya, a large mixed migration takes place, which has to pass along a corridor between flower and vegetable growers. Zebras, gazelles, even hippos and much else, especially giraffes must also pass a geothermal power station, belching steam, and a busy road, before they can find green food and good water. And water is the key to the whole challenge for both wildlife and people. Lake Naivasha is in trouble and some say it's now polluted waters may dry out completely. But it is still very beautiful and supports a great variety of wildlife. It needs help if it is to survive with all that goes with it - or to it. The corridor between the greenhouses where 'animals have right of way' is a lifeline for giraffes and this story features these unlikely, amazing animals. Their future, to some extent, is in the hands of the flower growers who export millions of blooms to the big, rich, supermarkets of Europe. They employ thousands of workers and there is a thriving tourist business around the lake. But all this is dependent on its' future. There is a plan to save it, with a budget. SO in this battle, 'green in tooth and claw' between the big supermarkets, the consumer and the consumed, will the lake and the giraffes survive? Next time you pick up a bunch of pretty flowers at the supermarkets, you may understand the real cost of a rose. Who will pay the price of saving a lake?

In this video Pat Badani discusses her project ©Al Grano: "Crop Cropping" during the Eco-Activism session at ISEA2013 (International Symposium on Electronic Art.) This session was part of the Sub-themes: Ecologies and Technologies. Artists & researchers inspected the interrelationship of nature, culture and technology at the centre-stage of contemporary life. ISEA2013 explored technology as both the problem and solution, celebrating the role of the artist as innovator and provocateur. ISEA2013 engaged questions of urban ecologies, consumption, food, climate, and sustainability. ©Al Grano: “Crop-Cropping” plays with the words "crop" and "cropping" used in agricultural and in digital art practices. The project juxtaposes both Mayan and electronic codes, and furthermore references Latin American literature (Men of Maize) to address the murky debates between Mexico and the U.S.A. concerning GM maize seed. “Crop-Cropping” is designed for touch-sensitive screens (smart phones and tablets.) It can be accessed via an Augmented Reality App. Foodstuffs in U.S.A. supermarkets containing GM corn, are tagged portals to vision-based augmented reality layers of digital content about maize. The AR layers unfold onto an interactive piece with a pictographic interface inspired by Maya logograms. Here you can interact with ideas about the past, the present and the future of maize, all by using your fingers in small gestures: Tap - Pinch - Swipe - Zoom. In the AR piece Badani focuses on the gap between seen and unseen realities in what we shop for and eat in the USA. In the interactive App she highlights the disassociation between cultures and cultural production in continental America; the tensions and gaps in what everyone claims to know, and the existence of glitches in knowledge systems. Maize is a means for Badani to address the latent erasure of native seeds and of ecosystems, and also the processes of translation, interpretation, juxtaposition, erosion and disappearance of national and continental narratives about maize as food, and equally as cultural symbol. With around eighty percent of fish stocks in trouble, species driven to extinction and ecosystems on the brink of collapse it is time to rethink how we harvest our oceans. Greenpeace is encouraging retailers to clean up their seafood shelves. By switching to a sustainable seafood sourcing policy they can change the world's fisheries and help to protect the world's oceans.

London has a love-hate relationship with fast food. Public health campaigns and celebrity chefs vilify it and warn it could kill us; yet, as this film shows, we’ve never had it so good. This programme provides an unadulterated celebration of fast food, showing, with an emphasis on our lunches, how food and eating have evolved since the 1950s. Special emphasis is made on the evolution and importance of supermarkets. As Rob Lyons, author of Panic on a Plate, tells us, supermarkets have enabled more people to be fed more inexpensively, conveniently and well.
