Defining Innovation for India, Dr. R A Mashelkar insists that till we learn HOW to successfully exploit a new idea, we will not learn the real value of Innovation. Highlighting the need for Speed, Scale and Sustainability - as key measures of success, he underlines the need to think big. In India if you idea impacts a few thousand people, its not really a great idea. It MUST reach a million people atleast to be of any relevance. That is an indication of the size of our challenges - therefore solutions must be designed for such scale too. Also ingrained in this definition is the thought of 'sustainability'. Not depending on an external source of funds - but instead dependent on a generated earning, designed innovatively to make products and services available for people who most need a particular product or service. Therefore if you think you are innovating, measure yourself against this simple definition. Has your idea successfully exploited a new idea?
