This is the promotional video for the Farmshed CNY Spring 2012 IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign. This summer, we intend to take Farmshed CNY on the road to promote Farmshed 2.0 web and mobile web apps. Our goal is to attend 50 different regional farmers markets. That means packing up the Subaru and traveling to 2 farmers markets every week, for 25 weeks, from late May to mid November. We figure the cost of gas, food, lodging, vendor fees, insurance, maintenance, and other expenses will come to $120.00 per market. That works out to $6,000.00, which is what to hope to raise on IndieGoGo.

New teamsters working their ox teams, doing remarkably well after just 4 weeks of training with Dick Roosenberg and the other Tillers International instructors. Note how skilled the teamster are becoming, even at this very early stage. For the most part, they are driving from behind the oxen (not in front), and controlling their teams with minimal effort. In the long run, this style of handling the animals gives the teamster additional flexibility in handling the team -- because animals are not tied to the visual cues they receive from watching the teamsters. In varying work situations, this will work to the advantage of the teamster, giving him or her increased flexibility. This will be helpful in situations where the driver needs to be behind the animals, whether driving a cart, or plowing with four or more oxen. The small team driven by the teamster approaching from the left of the screen (wearing the white hat) was one of the most unruly teams at the outset of the training. At this point, the animals seem remarkably comfortable with their teamster. He seems completely confident, as well.

Ox sensitivity training. Tillers International trains our teamsters - first by giving them a glimpse at what the ox is feeling when they train him. This increases the empathy for the animals, and thus increases the effectiveness of the teamster in working with his or her oxen. Once they have been in the position of the ox, slightly confused, and not knowing what is happening to them -- it is much easier to understand that yelling at the ox, or striking him hard will only increase his confusion. Also, since the "oxen" in this segment of the training are actually their friends, the natural thing is not to hit them very hard. But in fact, this is also the ideal way to deal with the oxen, as well. The tap is only a reinforcing hint of which way to turn. It is not supposed to be a punishment. So, it is good training for the next stage, working with the actual oxen. Good training techniques turn the oxen into willing partners.

It is essential that the ox yoke be very smooth, to avoid any type of discomfort or injury to the neck of the ox.
