Preliminary design for a new RES4 Prefab home, located on a beautiful country hillside site in Callicoon, NY overlooking a historic seminary and the Delaware River along the New York-Pennsylvania border. Featured sustainable technologies and design strategies include: - 119-Panel photovoltaic array (roughly a 24kW system using 200-watt panels, with the potential to increase capacity using higher-wattage panels). Estimated to generate 2 to 3 times the total energy consumption of the house. - Geothermal heating and cooling system, integrated with high-efficiency high velocity HVAC system and radiant floor heating system. - Rainwater collection cisterns for maintaining the vegetable garden. - Passive heating strategies using tile, stone and concrete flooring as thermal masses. - Primary southern exposure with large sliding glass doors for natural daylighting and passive winter heating, with roof overhangs and brise soleils to mitigate excess solar heat gain during summers. - Super-insulated, air-tight "flash and batt" enclosure: 2" spray foam insulation + fiberglass batt throughout. - LED down lights throughout. - Robust, durable, long-lasting materials including bamboo wood flooring (a rapidly renewable material source). www.re4a.com

This lighting project from Swedish designers Siri Bahlenberg and Sofia Bergfeldt is for those who know the joy of a good ice mold (an ice sphere for your whiskey, perhaps?) The Melt and Recreate lamp uses LED lights housed with fiber optic cables and features a lamp shade made from ice frozen around a metal fixture that attaches to the body of the pendant. With a 10 hour lifespan for the ice shade and a 10 hour incubating time for the ice to set in the mold, the lamp is constantly in flux—with each drop of melted ice from pendant to mold, the user gets an active reminder of the product's lifecycle. Melt and Recreate is part of the Ung Svensk Form highlighting the work of young Swedish designers.
