This was the final project for the "Just Type" course with Gail Anderson in the MFA Design program at School of Visual Arts. We were to work in black and white, only use shapes created with typographic elements (not full words) and set it all to an instrumental track. It was my first experience using AfterEffects.

For Stefan Sagmeister's class "Can Design Touch Someone's Heart" at SVA, each student was tasked with using design to affect the community in a positive way. I created a system for letting people in my neighborhood know how long they had before the next Manhattan-bound train was to arrive on one brisk Monday morning. Since there's no way to know until you're already below ground, one often finds themselves wishing they had stopped - or maybe wishing they hadn't. Giving this information up-front gives each person the opportunity to play a bigger role in how their mornings will unfold. 1-4 MINUTES is coded red with a correlating paddle noting, "MOVE IT OR MISS IT." In this case someone knows they have to run to catch it or save the trouble and wait for the next one. 5 MINUTES is coded purple with a correlating paddle noting, "ARE YOU FEELIN LUCKY?" This is that tricky time when you can try to manage picking up a coffee and catching the train... but it's a risk! One many New Yorkers boldly take each morning. 6-12 MINUTES is coded green with the paddle letting you know that it's safe to "GO GET THAT CUP A JOE!" ...or perhaps finish your cigarette, phone call, or whatever it is you'd rather be doing than running to a train that isn't even there.

Originally I attempted to create a space off of Facebook that would be more civil for debate, though I quickly realized that the problem wasn't WHERE it was happening, it was HOW it was happening. Debatable is a digital product for both the web and iPad that is designed to teach people how to debate better. I created it while studying with Funny Garbage Creative Director Andy Pratt at SVA's MFA Design program.

This is my thesis proposal for the MFA Design: Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at SVA. Shared Interest is a peer-to-peer lending platform for refinancing student loan debt. Together with an advisory board made up of financial analysts, risk managers, UX designers, and strategists, I look to bring Shared Interest to the world in the coming year.

When tasked with creating a concept for a magazine that doesn't yet exist, I set out to create the first sophisticatedly designed trade magazine for the marijuana industry in the United States. It is the "Wine Connoisseur" or "Beer Advocate" of this burgeoning industry. I wanted to remove the cheesy "stoner" graphics and type treatments that typically accompany the subject and replace it with thoughtful analysis of the history and future of the industry, including laws, practices, and personal profiles. I researched, photographed, and designed the entire experience.

Final project for Stefan Sagmeister's class "Can Design Touch Someone's Heart" at School of Visual Arts MFA Design program. Quote refers to the fact that we cannot change things about ourselves before first recognizing that something needs changing. Being able to accept that you're not perfect as-is is the first step toward getting a little closer to your ideal. When approaching this representation, I chose to focus on the idea of self reflection and shifting perspective - owning my flaws, in order to conquer them.
