            from Glory of Rama Added

The seven day austerity (Saptaham) of Datta Deeksha or Audumbara Diksha along with the Parayanam of Sri Datta Darshanam is highly beneficial both physically and spiritually. Sri Datta Darshanam is a highly spiritual story about Truth and Self-Realization written by Sri Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Mysore, India. The Datta Stavam recording used here is from Kakada Arati CD published by Avadhoota Datta Peetham. It was chanted by Sri Swamiji and the ashrama musicians. Sadguru Stavam is also included. Audumbara Deeksha, or Datta Deeksha: Procedure as explained by Datta Sadgurudeva Sri Swamiji: This austerity may be followed for 1, 3, 7, 10, or 40 days. One should remain celibate, sleep on the floor, and wear something green. A bead or twig from an Audumbara tree tied in a yellow or green thread should be worn around the wrist or the neck. One should remain quiet and serene during this period. Only one meal a day should be taken. It should be totally without salt, sour taste, or hot chilly taste. Daily Datta worship should be performed, with Datta japa (108 times Om Draam Dattaaya Namaha) and chanting of Datta Stavam. Going around the Audumbara Tree 18 times, 3 times daily is recommended. Daily reading or listening from Sri Datta Darshanam book written by Sri Swamiji is essential. A Mudupu should be prepared and placed at the altar while taking the resolve (sankalpam). The Mudupu consists of a dry coconut half, filled with some dates, channa, a bit of ghee, sugar, and as many coins as the days of the deeksha. This should be tied in a yellow or green piece of cloth. At the conclusion of the Deeksha the Mudupu should be given in a temple to be offered in homa. If that is not possible, it may be left in a flowing river. It is highly recommended that the entire Sri Datta Darshanam book be completely read or listened to, during the Deeksha period. If this book is read or listened to, like this, by following the procedures with total diligence and devotion, Sri Swamiji declares that any worthy worldly wish is certain to get fulfilled, and spiritual progress is ensured.
