"Deconstructed" is an exploration of raw data interpreted in unconventional mediums. Four original video clips recorded by the composer were intentionally glitched by destroying and remixing the underlying data. They were first modified using the program "GoldMosh," which enabled reordering of frames and video data using both controlled and random processes. The newly created video forms the piece's narrative structure. The original video clips were opened as raw data in Audacity, where they were exported as audio files. This reinterpretation of the data created unique and unexpected sounds and provided the source material for the piece. The audio was filtered into four frequencies with several synthesis techniques. A muted bass drum was placed at major transitions in the glitched video and was side-chained to control compression of the audio. This allowed for an accompanying subtle rhythm in the piece to match visuals. Filtering and frequency modulation were used to create elements that would match the destruction conveyed by the video's glitching and a glimpse at the sounds present in the original source clips. Conceived, composed, and created by Mason Morris. Special thanks to John Mitchell for assistance with audio engineering.

I was first exposed to post-punk new wave at an early age and this track reminds me of that time and place and how fast time has gone by.

This video shows the journey from start to finish of creating a drum 'n bass track with a 100% analog signal path from the synthesizers creating the music in real time, being recorded to open reel tape, mastering the tape with outboard analog equipment, and finally cutting the tape directly to vinyl. The audio of this track can be found at https://kxnz.bandcamp.com/track/analog-drum-n-bass The gear used in the synthesizer studio included: Modulars : Roland System 700 (Drums), Moog series 900 (minor chords), Roland System 100m (sub basses, wind sfx, sirens), Arp 2500 (squelchy stabs), Buchla 100 series (SFX) Other Synths : modified x0xb0x (low bass) Korg MS-20 (other bass), Roland System 100 standalone synth (other bass), modified Korg Monotron Duo (other bass) FX : Roland Space Echo RE-501 (tape delay, chorus, spring reverb), Roland DC-30 (analog chorus-echo), Roland Dimension-D Analog Chorus Mixer : Tascam M308b The mixed signal was recorded in a separate studio using a Studer mixer and tape machine. The premaster was then brought to a third studio where the tape was mastered using the following gear. Studer A812 tape machines ORAM BEQ Pro 24 mixing console API 550b EQ Tube-Tech CL 1b compressor Universal Audio Urei 1176Ln limiting amplifier Amek limiter Emt140 plate reverb The master was then brought to a forth studio where it was run from tape through a few more pieces of outboard gear to finalize the signal and cut directly to a 12" vinyl record. This video was taken with a cell-phone camera at the various locations and the audio for the video was recorded and limited in a digital audio workstation in parallel to the analog signal flow. Big thanks to the Tokyo University of the Arts for facilitating the creation of this track, and to James at www.inreallife.co.nz for cutting the vinyl record.

This gourd instrument is a synthesis of nature and technology. It uses motion sensor data to make music. To play, pick it up and move around. This is live audio, with no post-production. The sound source is inside the gourd itself. The whole scene was picked up with a directional mic recording into a zoom H6. This project is still underway. Controlling an AFM Element of a SY99 in realtime using a BCR2000 hardware controller. I am using a set of 7 presets on the BCR to control it. One global control preset and one for each Operator. The global set allows for control of both LFOs and Filters as well as the Pitch Envelope, which I did not make use of here... During this session I just tweaked the envelopes and output levels of the operators.
