      • Peay Vineyards - An Introduction

Peay Vineyards is a partnership between Nick Peay, Andy Peay and Vanessa Wong. Together they make wine from a cool, extreme site on California's West Sonoma Coast. First planted in 1998, this remote 51-acre hilltop vineyard is located above a river gorge in the far northwestern corner of the Sonoma Coast, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean at Sea Ranch. Together they share a passion to make wine that expresses the essence and height that can be possible from each grape variety. They grow 33 acres of Pinot Noir, 8 acres of Syrah, 7 acres of Chardonnay, 1.8 acres of Viognier, 0.4 acres of Roussanne and 0.2 acres of Marsanne. Winemaker Vanessa Wong left her position as winemaker at Peter Michael Winery in 2001 to launch Peay Vineyards. Prior to Peay's first vintage she made wine at Château Lafite-Rothschild, Domaine Jean Gros, Hirsch Vineyards (as winemaker) and Peter Michael (as winemaker). Nick, a University California Davis-trained and veteran Santa Cruz mountains winemaker, manages the vineyard with 8 full-time vineyard employees. In hopes of continuing to work with their land and produce great wines for many years to come, they farm organically and run both winery and vineyard off of solar power. Though the vineyard and winery are not a family heritage, they started it from scratch and have dedicated their lives to expressing the site through their wines. The wines can be found at select fine dining establishments, specialty wine shops and through their mailing list. Total production is 4,000-6,000 cases. Wines include Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier and Rousanne/Marsanne. Declassified wine is sold under the Cep label. They sell fruit to 2 wineries: Williams Selyem Winery and Failla Winery. 2009 Winery of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle, Top 100 Wine & Spirits for 6 years.
