In 2011 Drs. Carl June and David Butler at the University of Pennsylvania made big news by helping a handful of CLL patients by activating the patient's own immune system to fight the CLL. The approach is with chimeric antigen receptors, also known as "CARS." It produced impressive early results. But the process is expensive and very customized through a lot of effort. While the work continues in Pennsylvania, it also is moving forward at other major centers, including the large leukemia department at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. William Weirda is head of the CLL section there and is leading some innovative research with CARS that could lead to making it a less expensive, more accessible, and even curative therapy for more patients. He explains this leading-edge research in this interview with Patient Power's Andrew Schorr recorded at the 2012 meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

The development of multiple sclerosis (MS) involves cells of the immune system crossing the blood-barrier into the central nervous system (CNS), where they can promote inflammation, tissue damage and ultimately neurodegeneration. This animation details the development of MS and highlights the need for therapeutic agents that prevent neurodegeneration and induce CNS repair.
