    • Fiji Siren: NigaliPassage, Taveuni, Namenalala, Bligh Water

More images at: http://www.underwaterdisplay.net/dive52/ All footage was taken using the wonderful Fiji Siren live-aboard boat as a base. Most of the material for this video was shot on a ten day trip, 16-26 January 2014 in hot summer weather and glass calm conditions - one of the most enjoyable live-aboard trips I have been on to date! A few seconds were shot during an earlier and also enjoyable trip in November 2013. The ten day trip route gave the opportunity to spend time at many of Fiji's best dives sites; offering everything from big fish and cetaceans through to macro critters. Areas such as Nigali, Namena and Rainbow Reef would be difficult to collectively cover from land-based operations; particularly during a ten day window where the nights are often used to travel from one location to the next. The comfort and convenience of a remarkably well run live-aboard offers excellent opportunities for photography and diverse underwater experiences. It’s a somewhat dreamlike feeling waking up in the morning to a new dive location and time passes all too quickly. Video was shot with GoPro Hero3 - mainly under a quadcopter with both 3-axis and 2-axis brushless gimbals. No post stabilization used on the aerial footage. Stills (macro and wide) were shot with Nikon D7100 in a Nauticam housing with Ikelite DS160 strobes. All video processing was done using GoPro Studio 2. Still images were imported into GoPro Studio 2 after resizing and downscaling. Music by 3 Theory, ‘As We Go’.

The Sights and Sounds of Fiji was filmed January 2010 on the islands of Viti Levu, Taveuni and Qamea. The Fijians are a very friendly people and they welcome all their guests in an upbeat song "Bula" with the literal meaning of "life". Translated it means "hello" or "welcome". Song is a big part of their life and they always say goodbye with the haunting "Isa Lei". For anyone who has been to Fiji and heard this song it will bring tears to your eyes as they bid you farewell with garland and hibiscus. Life underwater is just as vibrant and colorful, set to native Fijian music. This was filmed with a Sony DCR-HC85 and Amphibico housing. It was produced to give everyone a little flavor of Fiji with the "sights and sounds" above and below water. Fiji is a must and should be on everyone's "bucket list".

              • A Whale of a Welcome - Unexpected Humpback Sighting off Taveuni Island in Fiji

On our way to Naitauba Island, Fiji, we had the opportunity to meet and swim with a young humpback whale who was playing in the water near our boat. We had walked out that morning to see the whale out in the water, and weren't sure if the whale was in the process of birthing or caught in the reef, or what. We spoke to some of our friends who live and work at the Taveuni Island Resort where we were staying, and they said that a whale sighting is very rare in this part of the ocean, and that only a few females come through there from time to time to give birth. So when we approached her, we were very cautious. As soon as we got closer, we realized that there was no reef nearby, and also no child. We had seen other snorkelers swimming around her already, and she was just rolling slowly around in the water, so we approached cautiously until we were in sight of her with our underwater housings. There was deep blue all around, with about 20-30 remora swimming around underneath her. She had quite an awe-inspiring presence! And since we didn't know what she was going through, we didn't get too close. We came up to defog our equipment before getting back in with her, and just then she dove out of sight and was gone. So we prepared to board the "Turaga Dau Loloma", a larger boat that would take us on to our destination, which was waiting a bit further away from the punt we were on. As Naamleela reached her hand out to board the boat, the humpback suddenly shot back up out of the depth and gave us a fantastic aerial display of her white underbelly in a full breach, just about 50 feet away from the large boat. We all boarded excitedly and proceeded to video and photograph her for the next hour or so as she led us out into the deeper waters, breaching and swimming along beside us in a clearly happy disposition of playfulness and delight. It was quite a welcome on our way to Naitauba Island, and as we finally picked up speed so as to make landfall in the tide window that we had, she gave us a final whole body wave as she breached one final time as if to say goodbye. It was a very happy day and we were all very grateful to spend such time with this beautiful being.

Dolphin Bay is a patch of paradise which will have a place in our hearts for a long time. Situated on the island of Vanua Levu where Somosomo Strait divides the islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu you can only get there by boat. This makes this place so peaceful and tranquil. We spent some unforgettable days there. The soundtrack to the video perfectly reflects our mood. We would like to come back one day.

A recent visit to the Fijian island of Taveuni from Ultimate Dive and Travel in which we dove the Rainbow Reef and visited the sites on the island. The video is set to the music of "We Are Fiji," a song by Danny Costello and a superb group of entertainers who performed a song aimed a healing some of the political and cultural challenges that have created conflicts for the islanders.
