Il mourut sur la table d'opération mais les médecins purent le ramener à la vie. Depuis, il bénéficia de nombreux traitements dans différents pays visant à améliorer son état et réparer les dommages causés au cerveau. Ces deux dernières années Carlos a reçu deux séries d'injections de cellules souches de sang de cordon ombilical en Chine. Dans cette vidéo qui fut tournée à la fin de la première série d'injections, le père de Carlos parle des progrès perçus pendant le traitement.

                      Non-profit One Mind for Research held its first annual Gala fundraiser on September 19, 2012 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Tom Hanks hosted special guests Sally Field, Glenn Close, Gena Rowlands and many others in this popular event. Sergeant First Class Victor Medina, who suffered traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress in combat in Iraq, spoke about his own struggles, moving many in the audience to tears.
