Bridges for Brain Injury is one of the biggest advocates for quality traumatic brain injury (TBI) services in New York State. It provides survivors with the tools and environment to regain independence and sense of self. These include life skills training, day program services, physical/occupational therapy, counseling, and behavior services. Their mission is to raise awareness of the effects of brain injury and living with a disability, as well as promoting prevention practices. They accomplish this through core values by building integrity, teamwork, education, and service. Not only does Bridges provide all of these opportunities, but it also offers a community where survivors of TBI or related injuries can connect with others who are dealing with common challenges. Wildlife Defenders joined Bridges in 2008. It is an education outreach program owned and run by adults who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. They share live native and exotic animal species by visiting schools, youth groups, nursing homes, and various community events. This program helps members with speech, memory skills and self confidence. Through personal interviews with day program members and staff, this documentary takes a deeper look into the real struggles and challenges that disability places on a person. It also addresses the social stereotypes that are often made against people with disabilities. The overall goal is not only to promote brain injury awareness and prevention, but also to encourage the viewer to take a step back and not be so quick to judge the next time they encounter a person in a wheelchair or taking a bit longer to order their lunch. Perhaps one day we will live in a world where disability is not the minority and the abnormal; where these people are not viewed as helpless, needy or pitiful. Perhaps one day they will be seen as strong, independent individuals working towards a better tomorrow. Disability or not, we all deserve to be treated with patience, love and kindness. This short narrative was an enormous opportunity for me that I took to heart. It was actually used as a final project for a film course I took last quarter (fall '14), with the assignment being "a day InThe life" of you. I took the theme and ran with it, attempting to create an almost therapeutic remedy for painful or haunting memories. I struggle with ptsd and grief from my multiple tours to Afghanistan while In The military. This piece highlights specifically the trauma and grief dealt with on a daily basis for myself, in regards to the loss of one of my closest friends, in a 25 minute battle for life and limb. The emotional weight associated with that single isolated moment in time has haunted me since that day, but after the completion of this project, I can see an enormous difference in my general mental health and state of being. I had to do an extreme amount of self exploration and recognizance to truly understand how I felt about it and what I would change. I imagine it can be incredibly helpful for others to do as well with memories or feelings that are unpleasant, painful, or re-occurring. Deconstruction of your most painful or haunting memories piece by piece, and creating a visual representation of them for the world to see, to really boil yourself down to the core and understand what is going on inside you, is priceless I was honored to be a part of my friends life, and would have taken his place any day. Enjoy the flick, leave feedback please! Cheers, LWP This Video is dedicated to the life and memories of GySgt Ralph E. Pate, Jr., who was my dear friend, mentor, inspiration, and somebody that countless others respected and looked up to. He was Killed June 26, 2011, while on foot patrol in the upper Sangin Valley, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Rest Easy Brother.
