Having received what we believe is the first REDRAY 4K Player released in the wild from RED Digital Cinema, here we show some footage run through the RREncode plugin (using REDCINE-X PRO Build 19) and playing back from a 4K file. The original clip was shot on RED EPIC 4KHD, 23.98fps@8:1 compression, and encoded using the RREncode Premium (18Mbps) option at 4K. Other settings available are Standard (9Mbps) and Cinema (36Mbps). The panel used to test here is a Samsung 7500 Series 55" 1080p with future tests coming soon on Seiki and Sony 4K displays. Thanks again to the good folks at RED for all of their support and passion.

Red Digital Cinema are leaders in the production world. They started their career at NAB, some seven years ago in a little tent. Many laughed at their "dream" of making a 4K camera. Once a reality, no one laughed anymore! Instead, the biggest projects in Hollywood fell in line, and they started shooting some of the largest projects in the business on Red cameras. It's only apropos that Red Digital Cinema take the lead once again, this time with the release of their Dragon 6K sensor, at NAB 2013. Red co-founder Ted Schilowitz shares all of the highlights of the latest offerings from Red Digital Cinema with Curt Pair and Band Pro.

Reporting live at the NAB Show 2013 in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to speak with Ted Schilowitz from Red Digital Cinema. In line with the recent announcement on Sunday of the highly anticipated Dragon sensor upgrade for Red Epic camera early adopters, RED literally shows off their efficient process of upgrading Red Epic cameras. In a Class 100 Cleanroom spanning over 20 feet wide, a team of RED technicians perform technical upgrades to cameras and perform quality assurance tests right before conference attendees' eyes. "It's pretty unique what's going on in our world here. I don't think anyone else at NAB are actually upgrading cameras and built a manufacturing factory line in their booth...We're pretty much the main force in digital cinema now all over the world...The Epic and the Scarlet have a 5K sensor and the only company that RED can beat with technology is ourselves." --Ted Schilowitz, RED Digital Cinema. RED Digital Cinema have announced their long awaited upgrade to the RED DRAGON 6K Sensor. And the big news is that it is available to RED Scarlet users! Film Live once again spoke to Ted from RED who had lots to say about the RED DRAGON 6K Sensor upgrade as well as other exciting developments. The new sensor from RED Digital Cinema is capable of shooting 6K Resolution at 100 frames per second. This translates to 9 times more resolution than High Definition and over 19 megapixels. The dynamic range is expected to exceed an impressive 16 stops. RED EPIC and SCARLET owners will be able to upgrade their existing sensors to RED DRAGON. RED early adopters will be the first to experience RED DRAGON 6K via RED’s RED DRAGON sensor upgrade program. Ted also spoke to us about the RED RAY, the first 4K Cinema Player to bring ultra high-definition content to your home, business or local theater using internet file based distribution. We also looked at the new RED ROCKET-X which provides real time 4K playback directly to your 4K display or projector. It's amazing how far the company have come since we first spoke with TED back at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2009, when the Scarlet was nothing more then a silver block of metal!
