In this wonderful passage, Paul shares the story of the generosity of the churches of Macedonia. Even though they have little, they are very generous, giving sacrificially beyond what is expected. For them, giving was a privilege because they were sharing in the service to God and the saints in Jerusalem, who were in a season of great need. Their motivation for giving was their love for the God who had graciously provided for them. We should give with the same attitude of gratitude.

In a very helpful way, Paul gives the Church of Corinth a paradigm for giving. 1.) Their giving should be regular, on the first day of the week. 2.) Even though the amount of their gifts may vary, it is important for each one of them to be invested in what God is doing there. 3.) Their gifts should be proportionate to their income. 4.) They should give voluntarily so that no one has to ask them to give. The four parts of this paradigm are laced with grace and gratitude, following the example of God’s gracious gifts to us.
