The Sanctuary opened in September 2009 and The Cranleigh is confident that this is the most luxurious Lake District hotel room in existence, offering astonishing private accommodation with its own private hottub. A perfect romantic getaway! Separate from the main hotel, the Sanctuary is a converted detached bungalow that has been transformed into its own private retreat featuring high ceilings, natural beams, remote control contemporary log effect fire, Bose surround sound throughout including the bathroom and hot tub, Ben de Lisi glass bath, mood lighting throughout and much, much more. It's one of the Lake District's best-kept secrets but has been the talk of the in-the-know glitterati for some time.... The Sanctuary is accessible from the rear car park. Bathroom The large bathroom is simply stunning and features the first Ben de Lisi glass bath ever to be put into a hotel room. The floor is tiled with Black Magic marble tiles and the walls with Samara Platinum, with underfloor heating. The large shower enclosure features mood lighing and an Ethos Chromatherapy shower head for the ultimate showering experience. Twin sinks, twin mirrors, luxury toiletries, towels and accessories are provided, with a 18" television to watch while relaxing in the bath. The bathroom also features Bose surround sound too if you prefer to listen to your favourite music through the iPod docking station. Through the bathroom and to the outside is a private hot tub area that has been designed and built using iroka timber featuring curved walls and decking. The area has mood lighting and outside Bose speakers to relax, ideally with a bottle of Champagne. The hot tub can fit 2 people comfortably and has spa controls and underwater lighting. Room information: The bedroom has been designed to an incredible standard with a super kingsize bed with luxury goose down bedding and an enormous 8 foot high designer headboard. There is a built in designer remote control log effect fire with a 46" LCD television above which is connected to a Bose surround sound Lifestyle system with iPod docking station and DVD player. There is a separate breakfast area, underfloor heating, built in wardrobes and a well stocked mini bar featuring contemporary cool lighting. There is a dressing table, hair dryer and remote control blinds in the high pitched ceilings with natural oak beams. The room has alternative mood lighting to set an ambience, especially in the winter with the warmth of the fire. The room has an internal phone to contact Reception for any requirements, free internet access and free access to a large DVD library. The fabrics and designer papers are from the Royal Collection which has been produced from the Queen's archives. There are tea and coffee making facilities and biscuits in the room and all occupants have free access to brand new 3 million pound refurbished leisure facilities where you will find a luxury spa with a 20m pool, steam room and gymnasium located a two minute walk away.

PaperBridge – a unique large-scale temporary installation made entirely from bright red paper, traversing a flowing river at the foot of Helvellyn, in the Lake District, was unveiled on 8th May 2015 as part of ‘Lakes Ignite’, Lakes Culture’s spring arts programme. It can be found between two parallel paths in the Grisedale Valley, near Patterdale, until 18 May. The bridge is a 2 mile walk from Patterdale, OS grid ref: NY 362 144. PaperBridge has been the dream of Teesdale based artist Steve Messam for over three years, which continues his series of ambitious temporary installations in rural landscapes. The bridge is totally free-standing – no glue, screws, bolts, fixings or supports have been used to hold the structure together. The bridge has been constructed using over 4.2 tonnes of bright red paper, cut into 22,000 sheets, to create a structure 5 metres in length, with a 4 metre span over the river and standing at 2m from water to top of arch. The bridge’s gabions are filled with over 3 tonnes of stone from the gravel beds in the river.
