Burney Fire Chief Ray Barber was continuing his investigation Tuesday morning, July 8, 2014, into what caused a natural gas explosion that set a garage and portions of the attic on fire at 20166 Mapleleaf Street in Burney. The fire was reported just after 11 p.m. Monday at the home of Willard and Theresa Hanlen. As Theresa was getting her dogs out of the house, additional explosions could be heard, possibly from combustive items in the garage, said Shasta County sheriff’s deputy Ken Koenen. The investigation indicates the gas explosion was not the primary cause of the fire. "I've narrowed the point of origin to an area about (1-foot-square) at the front of the garage," Barber said. No injuries were reported and structural damage was estimated at $30,000. About 15 firefighters from the Burney Fire Protection District and Cal Fire responded to the blaze.
