A night test with the 7D using a 50mm lens. Whereas the Roosevelt Island test was shot with a f/3.5 zoom, forcing me to crank the ISO up to 2000, picking up a lot of noise, here, I kept the lens at f/1.8 and never went above ISO 1000, and often had it at ISO 500. The noise was negligible.

On July 10th, I got to hang out and shoot some behind-the-scenes footage at the set of Jay Z's "Picasso Baby." "Backstage Baby" is the result. Intercut with scenes of the crew preparing and the audience waiting in line, you'll spot fleeting appearances by Marina Abramović, Judd Apatow, Alan Cumming, Jim Jarmusch, Taraji P. Henson, director Mark Romanek -- and, of course, Jay Z. This was a really cool project for me, because I grew up watching MTV and absorbed a lot of what Romanek, as well as David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and the other great '90s video directors were up to. "Backstage Baby" was a total DIY production. I served as director, photographer, editor and composer. "Idiot with a Tripod" was shot, edited and posted online in one day without any expectations. I simply thought it would be cool to shoot the big NYC blizzard on 12/26/10. Then Roger Ebert fell in love with it. He championed the short, calling it "Man in a Blizzard," and said it should win an Academy Award. It went madly viral after that and did over a million hits. It was subsequently named TIME Magazine's #3 Creative Video of 2011. So all I've got to say is: thanks to everybody who's seen the short and liked it. -J

This test was shot over 90 minutes in Long Island City primarily to try out the 60fps slo-mo. Over all, I was pretty happy with the results, but there are a few instances of banding, and you can see in a couple of shots that the water refractions are rendered as magenta and turquoise, which is undesirable. I built a DIY portable slider to use with my 7D. This is the test shoot. The ISO alternated between 1250 and 2500.
