Theo Jansen's "Strandbeests," now touring America, are a lovely, ephemeral hymn to nature and physics. This is one of the tabletop model versions - an easy build, with a sinuous wind-driven motion. shot with Canon t3i and iPhone 5c the song is "Resignation" by Kevin McLeod, available in the Vimeo Music Store

It takes something pretty special to get art-worlders out of their beds at 6.30am. But the stalwart souls (including The Art Newspaper's Louisa Buck) who made it down to the beach for a sunrise InstaMeet, marking the Miami debut of the Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s kinetic “Strandbeests”, were not disappointed. This short video shows my ArtPrize 2014 entry "Pony Ride" walking in its small circle. Surprisingly it traveled about 100 miles in that confined space on the UICA terrace before it had to be put into "light duty" status. Excessive pounding and metal fatigue caused a lot of failures during the run of ArtPrize 2014. Everything was kept operational and it lasted all through the event. Special thanks to the original artist: Theo Jansen, it is based on his design "the Strandbeest". To my knowledge this design has never been done as heavy as what I built here. the Pony Ride piece weighs over 250 pounds and is made from hand tools and wrenches. It was fun!

Intrigued by the 'Strandbeest' walking sculpture by Theo Jansen, I wanted to create a stool which implements this particular mechanism. Translating sculptures into interpretable and utilitarian furniture.

This is the first video peek at my 2014 ArtPrize entry "Pony Ride". It will be walking on the 5th floor terrace at the UICA from September through October 2014. I am hoping that it will generate a lot of smiles. Special thanks go out to the artist that inspired the project; Theo Jansen. Theo is a Dutch artist that builds large mechanisms out of PVC that are able to move on their own, known only as Strandbeest. I tip my hat to his ingenuity and inspiration.
