WO LANG? Berlin, Märkisches Viertel. // WHERE TO? Berlin. Ein Film von MAX KERKHOFF _____________________ A glimpse into the lives of disillusioned teenagers in the Märkisches Viertel, a neighborhood on Berlin’s outskirts: summer days revolving around beer, junk food and PlayStation. When they’re not hanging out around the local shopping mall, they mark time lounging in Kevin’s living room while his parents are gone for the summer. Alcohol is almost always involved, and often the police or local security. Disputes with neighbors, problems with crime, violence and graffiti are frequent themes, although unlike Kevin, most of them have never been arrested. Hard up for money, they hardly leave the neighborhood – which appears to be the hub of their existence. Their prospects are rather dim. What does the future have in store for them? • Queensbridge: The Other Side Trailer

              from MAYNOV PRODUCTIONS Added 116 1 0

Queensbridge: The Other Side documentary is based on the lives of the people living in ‘The Bridge. It’s not about drug dealers, crack-heads or prostitutes. These segments of society are not the majority of the 16,000+ residents who reside. The majority of Queensbridge residents are hardworking multi-cultural, multi-ethnic families trying to make ends meet; keeping their children off streets and in schools. The history of The Bridge,” is told through the stories of these residents. This documentary speaks of their struggle for change, success in career and life, of those who remain, and those who have moved away; yet many continue to support the community. The interviews share and reveal an awareness of the community’s triumphs and tragedies. The Queensbridge community would be no different from Westbury Long Island, Scottsdale Arizona, Scarsdale New York or even your neighborhood; if in these neighborhoods, 16,000+ people did not live on top of each other within a six block radius with limited resources and assets. However, we all face the same challenges of raising a family and coping with the daily grinds of life. This documentary shows that Queensbridge is home in the truest sense of the “American Dream.” It is no bed of roses, neither is it a bed of thorns. Heralded as the New York City’s community of choice for post war veterans and their families, 1939 marked the construction completion of the Queensbridge Housing Project.” “The Bridge” from inception was built as a stepping-stone for families to save up enough money to buy a house, or rent a larger apartment. A few decades later, most families were unable to achieve the same goals as their predecessors, due chiefly to economic disadvantages. Now, second and third generations of low-income families are trapped in a community, which was not designed for permanent living. These families and individuals try to survive the perils of life in a place they call home, the best way they know how. “The Bridge” is a place based on emerging ethno-social and religious cultures. Queensbridge has left ft’s mark as an important part of New York City’s urban history.

Bruce is an extremely well read and highly politicised man. He has always been politically active, and has been especially active in the defence of workers rights in Melbourne. This film explores Bruce's life and experiences through the backdrop of the 8 hour working day movement, which was established at the Melbourne Trades Hall. Note - his name is not really Leon! This film was supported and screened by Projector Bike. Part of the 'View From Here' short film strand. View From Here The Projects worked in collaboration with St Mary's House of Welcome, Wintringham, 862 Productions and Yarra Community Housing to create a range of short films. These films explore a diverse range of ideas and interests. They were developed and cultivated during weekly workshops over a four month period. Initiated as an extension of Projector Bike, this project has been interested in low-fi, mobile and do-it-yourself film-making process. we met in cafes, on park benches, in people's homes, in opportunity shops and community centres around the city. These places became our workshops and sources of inspiration. By utilising modern digital film-making equipment, we're able to work flexibly and empower community members to play integral roles in the film-making process.
