Sometimes You Just Roll With it... Being a sound effects recordist has it's moments... moments when you just have to let go and qo with the day. It's been a while since I have experienced this as running my online business, contract sound design work and all the other things that go along with living life as a self employed maniac take up all of my time and having a structured schedule is a priority. Every now and then something comes up where you just have to throw all this out the window and go with the moment. This happened to me a while back when a friend contacted me very early in the morning during a "regular" work day and said "we are going out to shoot some machine guns and suppressors today, wanna come along?" "Ahhh... OK, when and where are you going?" I asked. He said " meet us at 11AM at a gas station, we'll go grab some lunch, then we will figure the rest out" OK, now the day became very interesting before it even started. Having only had two cups of coffee when I got the call, I quickly consumed a third and then had to think very quickly about what recording gear I was going to bring, what the weather forcast was for that day and yes, I had to get myself together at that hour in the morning. First thing to tackle was the gear. There were many unknowns at this point so I had to pick as few microphones as possible for recording guns. The reason for this is that I had no idea what and where the location was going to be and it looked as though the weather may get bad later in the day with rain and wind creeeping down from the North. The least amount of microphones would allow me to pack up quickly in case a storm showed up. More to come... -Frank

Presenting The M60 Machine Gun HD Professional Sound Effects Library, a multi-channel collection of 129 Broadcast WAV tracks recorded at 24-Bit 192kHz and 24-Bit 96kHz. The M60 is a belt-fed machine gun that fires the 7.62 mm NATO cartridge (.308 winchester) commonly used in larger rifles. The M60 used for this collection is a M60E3: An updated, lightweight version adopted in the 1980s. The M60E3 was introduced circa 1986 in an attempt to remedy problems with earlier versions of the M60 for infantry use. It is a lightweight, "improved" version intended to reduce the load carried by the gunner. The gun was recorded on three separate occasions. There were two sessions of shooting and foley and one extra foley session. All the foley was recorded outside as the gun is most likely used in that environment. The first shooting session captured the medium close and distant perspectives from many positions in mono and stereo. The second shooting session captured the close up and medium distant perspectives in mono and stereo to round out the collection. All aspects of the gun were recorded including single and multiple burst shooting, mechanisms, handling and bullet belt actions.

Sights and sounds from the recording of North Country Trains HD Professional Sound Effects Library from The Recordist. Part 3: Weeks 8 and 9 of recording freight trains in and around the panhandle of Idaho. A Sennheiser MKH-8040ST was used for all of the trains in this video. I recorded high speed pass bys in the fog, captured some awesome slack take up coupler impacts and witnessed some cool track vibrations from approaching trains on a curved set of railroad tracks. Some very close up rail car movements with their slow metal stress actions were also recorded. I was able to get the MKH-8040ST within a few feet of the slow moving rail cars and locomotive engines.
