from OTTAWA INTL WRITERS FESTIVAL / Added

Part of writing a book of historical fiction is doing your research. For Sean Michaels, whose novel "Us Conductors" is about the inventor of the theremin, Lev Termen, this meant learning to play the instrument. At our spring 2014 festival Michaels gave us a demonstration of this unusual instrument and read from his 2014 Giller longlisted book. Sean Michaels was born in Stirling, Scotland, in 1982. Raised in Ottawa, he eventually settled in Montreal, founding Said the Gramophone , one of the earliest music blogs. He has since spent time in Edinburgh and Kraków, written for the Guardian and McSweeney’s , toured with rock bands, searched the Parisian catacombs for Les UX , and received 2 National Magazine Awards.

Where is the line between truth and fiction when writing about history? What kinds of research do writers do? How do the real life characters relate to the fictional ones, and what consideration do we have to give to the living? In spring 2014 Mark Medley sat down with Steven Galloway, Sean Michaels and Eva Stachniak to talk about their writing processes and why they write historical fiction. Steven Galloway is the author of Finnie Walsh and Ascension. He teaches creative writing at UBC and SFU, and lives with his wife and two young daughters in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eva Stachniak was born in Wroclaw, Poland. She came to Canada in 1981 and has worked for Radio Canada International and Sheridan College, where she taught English and humanities. She is the author of the acclaimed debut Necessary Lies, of Garden of Venus and of the bestselling first novel in her Catherine the Great series, The Winter Palace. Stachniak lives in Toronto, where she is at work on her next novel. Visit her at evastachniak.com.

This song is about the lack of wontons that are found outside of the New York metropolitan area. Specifically, they are increasingly difficult to find outside of Long Island, and once you are west of the Mississippi, The Coveted Holy Wonton is nearly impossible to find.
