The Wexner Center For the Arts, Columbus, OH, October 2008 The Shipment takes the audience on an awkward and volatile roller-coaster ride through the absurdities and atrocities that arise whenever people start trying to talk about the black experience in America. For this work, playwright and director Young Jean Lee, a Korean American, challenged herself to create a “Black identity-politics show." Ludicrous, honest, and devoid of truisms, The Shipment dares to ask embarrassing questions and seek solutions to impossible problems. Driscoll choreographed a dance of raw physicality and expression loosely referencing minstrel show antics as the opening number Written and directed by Young Jean Lee Choreographed by Faye Driscoll Produced by Caleb Hammons Scenic Design by David Evans Morris Costume Design by Roxana Ramseur Lighting Design by Mark Barton Sound Design by Matthew Tierney Stage Managed by Teddy Nicholas, Sam Seymour, Aaron Rosenblum. Playwright and director Young Jean Lee and a talented cast of 5 African-American performers create an unsettling terrain of well-trodden stereotypes that dare audiences to laugh as they consider their own preconceptions about race and culture. One of the leading and most provocative voices in American contemporary theater, Lee pushes herself to new artistic heights as she confronts her fear about creating an ethnic identity play through the lens of a "black identity politics show."
