I’ve been putting this off … but I finally feel compelled to post it. A hero of mine, Jimmy Berick, died recently. Jimmy Berick and his band, TRAKSTOD STATION were my biggest inspiration and life saver in high school. Charley Lyons, Bob Carson and Lee Nelson were also in the band. All of them were incredible musicians. I must have been 17 years old … back in 1969 … when my best friend, John Watts and I booked them at the Vet's Hall in the small town (at the time) of Redding, CA ... just so we could see them play. Spoke to Jimmy on the phone just a couple years ago ... we were both old men now ... making sure it was ok with him that my band,THE UNITS (Official), could cover and record a song he wrote ... but that his band had never recorded. The only cover song my band has ever recorded. Very sad. Anyway … Jimmy used to play it on a laptop steel guitar … that sounded like heaven. I’ve done my best to re-create it on my minimoog … with the help of my Redding pals, Tim Ennis and Brad Saunders … but it’s still just a postcard of what the real experience was. Not surprising to me that our little town of Redding, CA recently came in at #3 in America’s most miserable cities: https://homes.yahoo.com/photos/gallery-america-s-most-miserable-cities-slideshow/ But … they forgot to mention the guy that made that not true … Jimmy Berick.
