Footage, including time lapse, from near Dance Hall Rock, Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument, Utah, USA. I found these little natural gardens living in bowls carved into the top of the rock. It made me wonder how it would be to live in a bowl. Then I realized that we all do.

View the full documentary on Aeon Video: aeon.co/video/science/why-do-i-study-physics-a-short-film-about-beautiful-stuff/ Physics is a complex discipline, one that simultaneously illuminates and beguiles. Though it promises to make sense of a chaotic world, and find order in disorder, it can be as confounding as it is enlightening. In her short animated documentary Why Do I Study Physics?, Xiangjun Shi finds beauty in both the orderly world of physics and the chaos of real life. Touching on concepts as diverse as gravity, time, and parallel universes, she offers a personal response to the fundamental questions that physicists are trying to answer. But her film is also a celebration of the mystery of unanswered questions: for Xiangjun Shi, there is as much joy and beauty to be found in the pursuit of knowledge as there is in its acquisition. This is an example entry for the Swindon Independent Film 30 second Microshort film challenge. 'All flows' deals with the theme of impermanence and continual (flowing) change. The sentence chosen for interpretation was: 'Nothing lasts...but nothing is lost'. This entry was made with stock footage taken from videvo.net under creative commons. Why not join the group and make your own microshort? Your camera probably does video, or you can use a smartphone or desktop animation. https://www.facebook.com/groups/swindonindependentfilm/ 38-1823
