On 2009-03-30 the Shipwreck Exploration Team visited the wreck of the HMCS Thiepval which lies in Barkley Sound, British Columbia. The Thiepval is intact and entirely covered in plumose anemones. The wreck is lying in approximately 50'of water on its port side and the bow section has begun to collapse. The hull is resting against the rock that claimed the ship in 1930. Some artifacts can be found inside the wreck including unexploded ordinance, which should be avoided. Visibility can be poor in the area and care must be taken not to accidentally swim into the wreck. In times of good visibility this is one of the nicest wreck dives in British Columbia. The wreck is inhabited by ling cod, rockfish, crab, etc. More information is available in our Shipwrecks Directory: http://www.shipwreckexplorationteam.ca/

Memories from several visits to Belgium and Northern France. Mainly WW1 but the Monument to the Resistance from WW2. All well worth a visit! A piece of music by John Williams which is a good theme for the images. Played by the Band of the Coldstream Guards.

It's the biggest British battle memorial in the world and commemorates over 73,000 casualties, most of whom died during the First Battle of the Somme in 1916. The Thiepval Memorial also requires constant care from War Graves Commission staff, to ensure the fabric of this hugely important structure is in the best condition possible. This film examines what is involved in maintaining Thiepval.

From the BBC drama-doc 'The Somme: From Defeat To Victory', this clip examines the effect of the loss of Thiepval to the German offensive, and the Allies subsequent resurgence in 1916. The film was made by the (now sadly departed) BBC's in-house Documentary department, approaching from the battle from a unique viewpoint - how despite being defeated, the Allied armed forces took the lessons learned during fighting, and applied them in subsequent battles to eventually win the war against Germany. Production Company: BBC Director: Detlef Siebert Editor: Alan Lygo Music: Alasdair Reid
