      • Here We Go Magic - "Made To Be Old"

from the album, A Different Ship (2012/Secretly Canadian). To purchase: http://www.scdistribution.com/music-shop.html?class=artist&artist=Here%20We%20Go%20Magic I've been experimenting with making music videos using footage from archive.org for my musical project Foothills, (https://vimeo.com/61435561). I thought of making a video for a song I've had on repeat, Made To Be Old by Here We Go Magic. The song seems to hint at the naivete of youth, and the wisdom or value of aging, but in a way that your cool uncle might (http://i.imgur.com/u6FsMwc.jpg). Considering those feelings, and HWGM being based in NY my first thought for video was footage I had discovered of the Third Avenue El Train in NY, and specifically a section featuring a giddy little girl and her perspective of an old train ride. Besides choosing the time that the audio would start I did no editing to the original video. I was surprised to observe that there were several meaningful coincidences throughout the video. *************** A Different Ship is Here We Go Magic's most remarkable and captivating album yet, with an emotional and musical arc that is alternately calming and anxiety-inducing, and often both at once. "I Believe In Action" and "Make Up Your Mind" sound like they're being beamed in from outer space, while more earthbound tracks such as "Miracle of Mary," "Over The Ocean" and "Alone But Moving" amble in a somnolent haze, with Temple's cool timbre cutting through the fog.Recorded & produced by Nigel Godrich (Rodiohead, Beck), the ten songs of A Different Ship carry a consistent thematic concern -- what the band describes as an "unresolved tension between valuing being alone and valuing being connected." Says Temple: "The music is beautiful, but feels like it's brittle and about to crack. It's always suspended in between major and minor, happy and sad, trying to find that middle ambiguous place." video source: Prelinger Archives (http://archive.org/details/ThirdAve1950) arranged by: Chase Hudson

        • HAUNTING HOUSES - Vacant Buildings between 100th and 120th Street on Third Avenue, New York City,

16 mm, color film I have been living in Spanish Harlem since 1997, a period where most of the New York city has seen massive re-development and also lots of gentrifications. Third Avenue between 110th and 120th street has not seen much change since and houses are not only boarded up but even 'bricked up' for many decades. The reasons are complex but real estate speculations, mismanagement and general distrust in the neighborhood are overwhelmingly to blame. 'Haunted houses" refers to vacant buildings in Spanish Harlem as mentioned in a New York Times article by a housing advocate. According to this article "one of four low-rise residential buildings on avenues or major cross streets in East Harlem had open stores but sealed-up residential floors." This results in thousands of lost housing unites, lost residents and lost revenues for the neighborhood. Thus, East Harlem suffers from a sense of normalcy and a lack of residential vitality. From an aesthetic point of view this inaction offers the beautiful spectacle of a time capsule and caters to all the negative prejudices this neighborhood has suffered so much from. see more on: www. ganahl.info/hauntedhouses.html rainer ganahl - ganahl.info
