              • Music Assembly | 14 February 2013 | Seahouses Middle School

from Seahouses Middle School / Added

Our last assembly of this half term was a music assembly when, again, every pupil in school performed on a musical instrument. Each class took it in turn to play to everyone else and show what they had achieved, with a lot of hard work, in their music lessons. Band played everyone into assembly with a performance of the theme from James Bond. There are seventeen members of band at the minute, five from last year who have been helping the twelve new members to settle in and perform as a group. They are working hard to put together a programme of pieces so that they can get out into the community and perform on various occasions later in the year. Then Year 5 were the first class to perform – they did extremely well as they have never played as a group before in front of an audience. They have been learning how to find notes on various instruments and how to keep time by listening to each other, impressing everyone with their performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. As each class played you could see progression through the school and when Year 6 played Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” you could immediately hear all the different reggae rhythms being played at the same time as well as chord sequences changing between the different sections of music. Year 6 can tell you anything you need to know about Bob Marley and his music! Year 7’s piece was One Direction’s “One way or Another” and for this they needed to know chromatic notes – some sharps and flats – as well as be able to play syncopated rhythms off the beat. They held together really well and there were so many of them that some pupils were working with a partner and had to seamlessly change over half way through. This year, Year 8 chose their own piece – Jason Derulo’s “Trumpets”. Not only did they have to learn to play the different chords and melodies, they had a say in how the piece was performed – who played what and how the accompaniment should sound. At the end of the assembly band played their last piece, Mika’s “Happy Ending”, as pupils were leaving. Extremely well done to everyone!
