In March 2010, Mike Hanson, blind since birth, took on the 2,174 mile Appalachian Trail to make a dramatic statement about the competence and independence of the visually impaired and to spotlight the 70% unemployment in that population. Stepping on the snow-covered trail in Georgia, he became "Bulldog" and for the next 6 and half months faced the rugged and sometimes dangerous (for sighted hikers) mountain footpath which is the Appalachian Trail. He was accompanied, but not led by award winning filmmaker Gary L. Steffens, "Hitchcock," who captured Bulldog's challenges, grit and courage. He also strove to put the viewer on the Appalachian Trail as the hiker experiences it: the rocks, climbs, campsites, laughter, Trail Angels, wildlife, fellow hikers (who become good friends), challenging weather and the visual majesty of the Appalachian Trail itself. The series, which is nearing completion (as of Spring 2015), will cover 16 hours. "Sherpa", who thru-hiked the AT in 2003 stated, "It's so vivid. You feel like you're actually there." Shot cinematically with traditional technique (and subjective camera), the episodes move quickly and are scored with traditional folk, blues and Americana. Hiker culture, personal stories, trail history and researched folklore is included in side stories (such as the Brown Mountain ex-slave settlement, hermit Nick Grinstaff, lost Little Ottie Cline Powell and more). Please see facebook.com/pages/The-Hanson_Appalachian-Campaign/189755727503 for frame grabs and the story from the trail as it occurred, plus series update. Mike Hanson's book, "The Unseen Trail" is available on Amazon. Contact garylsteffens@mchsi.com. Thank you for your interest in Mike Hanson's quest to open doors for the visually impaired!

Follow Spiral, Reverie, and their Catahoula dog, CamDog, north on America's oldest footpath; the Appalachian Trail. After a couple from Louisiana made it their goal to hike from Georgia to Maine in 2010, they take their first steps on the A.T. in April 2012. Even with all their preparation, the trail offered something new, beautiful, and unexpected every day. This film is a first hand account of what it's like to hike northbound on the Appalachian Trail. Whether you are looking for inspiration, using it as a source of preparation for your own hike, or just want to live vicariously through the film, it's a great, heart-felt, family-friendly take on what it means to live in the mountains for 6 months on the adventure of a lifetime. With a camera attached to CamDog's backpack, the film features a unique dog's-eye-view of the Trail.

My eastbound section hike of the Pacific Northwest trail from Oroville, Washington to Glacier National Park, Montana. Unfortunately, a large portion of the trail entailed road walking which made for a less then exciting month of hiking. The entire trail is 1200 miles long and stretches from the Pacific ocean in Oylmpic National park to Glacier National park.
