March 10th is the Tibetan Uprising Day. On this day in 1959, tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, rising up against China’s illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland. They surrounded the Potala Palace, the home of the Dalai Lama, to protect his life and the future of the Tibetan nation. Fifty-six years later, Tibetans inside Tibet are unequivocally demonstrating that they will not be controlled by Beijing, nor can they tolerate the extreme repression they have been forced to endure for the past six decades. China’s rule has created a crisis in occupied Tibet. Repressive policies and the severe crackdown have provoked an unprecedented wave of self-immolations by Tibetan monks, nuns, teenage students, mothers with children and respected community members. At least 136 Tibetans have sacrificed their lives for freedom and happiness to be returned to Tibet.

Some in Nepal fear that China is stirring up tensions between their countrymen and the Tibetan refugee population. Kathmandu has come under increasing Chinese pressure to clamp down on protests by Tibetan political activists, making the lives of some refugees increasingly difficult. Al Jazeera's Subina Shrestha reports from Kathmandu.

A short scene from my unfinished documentary film shot many (many!) years ago, on Tibetan refugees living in Bir Tibetan Settlement in the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. The film follows three distinct families in the community and how they are surviving and maintaining their cultural integrity, as well as the shows the importance and integration of monastic life and institutions in the community.

The Mother's Wish Foundation opens doors for exceptional female students from Tibet by providing scholarships to support their studies at the middle school, high school, college and advanced degree levels. Without outside financial assistance, these young women would be forced to drop out of school and earn their livings as herders or farmers. Mother's Wish is one of the many programs envisioned and established by Machik to create new opportunities for communities on the Tibetan plateau.
