Time's Turn is the latest incarnation of my Time Distortion Machine piece. Instead of using a Kinect to control the temporal video distortions, visitors interact with a pair of turntables. In this interactive installation, Jeff Johnston's generative graphic video loops provide the content for the Time Distortion Machine. He created several layered effects that increased in intensity as you move forward in time. The combination of the interactive distortions and Jeff's layered artwork created some interesting and unexpected effects for our exhibit at Lab Art Show. 'Falling is just like flying, except there is a permanent destination.' A concept video that was made based on this quote (from the Sherlock BBC series). An experiment in the different falls that a person goes through in a lifetime. An assignment for the Time Based Media course. The theme was 'Time Distortion'.

This video shows the Time Distortion Machine in action: it's taking high speed footage of a cheetah and combining multiple moments into a single image. I'm waving my hands around in front of a Kinect to choose exactly which moments in time appear where. I can push pixels forward in time or stand aside and let them fade back to the first frame. This thing is a lot of fun: I've also experimented with slow motion clips of snowboarding, BMX, explosions, and flaming tennis balls. If you're in Vancouver, come play with temporal distortions at my booth at Mini Maker Faire, 1st and 2nd June. http://vancouver.makerfaire.ca Thanks again to Gregory Wilson of National Geographic's Cheetahs on the Edge for sharing the source movie clip. They set up a crazy rig to film this and the footage is amazing. https://vimeo.com/53914149 More stills on my Tumblr. http://danielmclaren.tumblr.com Source code is up on GitHub. https://github.com/danielgm/KinectTemporalMaskEditor Thanks!

The 3rd of 3 video / stop-motion experiments on the theme of violence (la violencia). Drawing on the feelings of crisis of this period in history; sound, colour and time distortions are used as ambient environments to create an experience in the place of traditional narrative with the intention of allowing some of the collective numbness, fear and uncertainty to leak in. Here are a trinity of personal nuclear winters. They were requested by Jessica Berlanga-Taylor, the Editor of: re-d:arte, cultura visual y género para Programa Universitario de Estudios de Genero, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM) D.F., re-d: art, visual culture and gender an online magazine associated with and created for the gender studies department at University of Mexico, in Mexico City
