Watched and captured the Aurora Borealis for the first time in my life. It's a little out of focus but still quite stunning. Can't wait to do it again a little further north!

This year, using the peak of solar activity and equinox spring, I traveled in March to Finnish Lapland, Saariselkä in concrete, in order to see and photograph the Northern Lights. I was lucky and I could enjoy the wonderful northern lights. This video is made up of aurora timelapse sequences, all were taken with a Canon 550D and Zuiko 28mm and Tokina 11-16 mm. The camera, batteries and lenses performed well, but the low temperatures froze the lenses but I still managed to get these pictures.

Second night in a row we had the northern lights just low on the horizon instead of the brilliant display we had last night.

This is a shortened, Aurora-only version of GATES TO THE ARCTIC - Northern Norway Landscape and Aurora Borealis Timelapse To view the full version including all landscape timelapse sequences go to: https://vimeo.com/52619331 -- Best viewed in fullscreen with scaling turned off -- This video features timelapse sequences from my trip to the polar circle of norway, mostly the Tromsø area (Kvaløya, Ringvassøya, Lyngsalpan and some other areas of the Troms county). For me, as a greenhorn, Tromsø turned out to be a perfect base for the journey. It‘s a nice city with every comforts like hotels, bed and breakfasts, an airport, car rentals, supermarkets, restaurants etc. You can easily access the coastal and mountain areas from there and make it back to your warm hotel bed even if you stay out late. It‘s even possible to go to the Lofoten islands from there, but it‘s still a 6 hour drive. Here are some of the websites that I constantly checked out and considered for getting the optimal Aurora display. It‘s some pretty nerdy stuff but I highly recommend to do so. But in the end you just need some luck and patience, I guess. 3 HOUR KP INDEX - This one is pretty exact and reliable. It shows you the auroral activity in 3 hourly steps. swpc.noaa.gov/rt_plots/kp_3d.html 27 DAY AURORA FORECAST - This weekly updated list gives you somewhat exact information about the sun activity, which directly influences the Aurora Display. The values change a lot though, don‘t align your trip regarding this list. swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/weekly/27DO.txt AURORA DISPLAY Works good together with the 3 hour KP Index. Shows the dimensions of the recent Aurora. full.storm.no/tv2ver/nordlys.aspx TROMSØ WEATHER A good and reliable weather forecast source. yr.no/sted/Norge/Troms/Troms%C3%B8/Troms%C3%B8/ TROMSØ WEBCAM Just to get a glimpse. weather.cs.uit.no/ If you have any questions about the trip in general or if you‘re planning a trip yourself just drop me a line. Some time-lapses captured while camping near Sweet, Idaho the weekend of June 15th &16th 2012. There were 2 large solar flares that week and I was lucky enough to capture some of the Northern Lights which are not too common this far south.
