Environmental crime is skyrocketing globally with serious consequences that go far beyond conservation. The United Nations reports that poaching of endangered species, wildlife trafficking, black market fishing, illegal logging, and a wide range of other environmental crimes is upward a $200 billion annual industry. It is also an often overlooked U.S. national and global security challenge with serious consequences as these illicit activities finance both transnational organized crime and terrorism.

Story: Protecting young vulnerable women from human trafficking in Moldova Production: Markus Haist | 6:30 min | English Themes: Activism/People Power, Arts & Media (in social change) Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Many people leave their homes in the country tucked in between Ukraine and Romania to find work in Moscow, Kiev or in the West in order to provide for their families who stay behind. Most of the time the children stay with their grand parents. Without any real perspective in life and no protection they are easy prey to human traffickers. For almost 20 years the danish couple Charlotte and Johannes Petersen and their organization Pilgrims International have worked in Moldova to help the people with humanitarian needs. In the fall of 2014 they met with me in Germany and the idea of making a short movie about a project that provides a safe place for these vulnerable young girls was born. This was the start of „Shelter“. End of January I travelled to Moldova for 5 days. I had the chance to meet many wonderful people and do all the interviews and filming on the original locations. I was very impressed by the tireless effort of Johannes and Charlotte and their team and the honest, hands-on approach of helping people in need.
