1. Sky Ship

I am not alone imaging many of our sky scrapers leading hidden lives as aircraft, rockets, or simply a "Sky Ship." That tall pointy building that defines the San Francisco skyline is a good candidate to engage in such an endeavor. Standing 853 feet high, the Transamerica Pyramid seems to be San Francisco's way of saying to Florida, "Cape Canaveral, Cape schma-naveral!" Our pyramid stands over twice the height of a Saturn V even with the Apollo spacecraft on top and you can lease an office there to boot. So why wait for it to lift off? Here's my version of when it does. "853" is my submission #1 for One Day On Earth's latest project: "One Day in San Francisco. Your Day. Your City. Your Future." UPDATE (May 2nd, 2014): I am very pleased, honored, and humbled to learn that this video earned an Honorable Mention in the Vimeo Weekend Challenge for April 26th, 2014. Link to One Day On Earth: http://www.onedayonearth.org/ Link to Vimeo Weekend Challenge: https://vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge/videos/93275220 The number 853 connects me to this building, The Transamerica Pyramid aka the "pointy" building which stands at 853 feet tall (official height) at 600 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, California. 853 was also the address of the house I grew up in a small town on the prairie of Northern Illinois. When I was a teenager, my oldest brother Richard was working as an architect for William L. Pereira & Associates in Los Angeles who at that time were in the design phase of this building. I have a hunch that the number 853 is not a coincidence. This edit was "Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge" as well as the One Day On Earth, "Your Day. Your City. Your Future." project. This is a small portion of the clips I took on Saturday afternoon, April 26th, 2014 but represent my focus on the obscure details that define San Francisco. I plan to submit more material in the coming days. Camera, Editing, and Original Music composed and performed by Phil Loarie

Music by Jerry Goldsmith. "Love Theme from Chinatown" // Geffen Records. Canon 60D. Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 VC. VSCO Film. The first and one of the largest, Chinatown in San Francisco is a unique place. My friend Delissa and I started shooting at 6am and I was operating on about 3 hours of sleep so it really took me a while to warm up and get my "eye" working. I've never seen this part of the city looking the way it was and I really felt like I stepped back in time. It was quiet and people were scarce. Chinatown was getting ready to warm up and start booming as it usually does, luckily we caught it at a beautifully peaceful time, sunrise. Jerry Goldsmith's music really compliments the footage I shot and brings out the classic side of this city. Enjoy.

From the Skydeck (40th Floor) of Mandarin Oriental Hotel for James and Jan's wedding. Can you spot the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Transamerica Pyramid, Coit Tower and Fisherman's Wharf? It's also fleet week so perhaps you'll hear the Blue Angels flying in the background.
