The Toilet of Venus ('The Rotherhithe Venus') This piece is a transcription project inspired by the Rokeby Venus by Diego Velazquez. Taking as the premise the idea of "making real" the nude in the original painting I have approach this in two ways via video. This video is the second time I've come to the scene. In full nakedness (minus some nude knickers used in my first attempt that were apparantly not so nude!) the scene became one of exploring distance and barriers in order to find out what it takes to become the focus of cultural symbolism. Not so much an exploration of my own self as my interpretation of actually being a mythical figure. To get closer to "Venus" I had to go further from myself. As I watched the footage I had shot I found music resounding in my head and hence the addition of Bach's Magnificat ("Suscepit Israel"). I was researching ideas of spring and growth from ideas of femininity and fecundity and found this music with no idea of what it signified. In a way the content was secondary as I was drawn to the sound of the female voices in order to make strange this figure that is resolutely only an outline. I like the notion that humanity has a compulsive tendency to reach skyward to romantic and religious ideas of love and symbolism as reflected in the music and yet my footage is contemporary, an everyday sort of place with a nobody as a character who is both there and gone.

Each cell in our body inherits the same master copy of DNA, but different cell types use it differently. Transcription Factors help influence which genes are used in which cell. Understanding how these dynamic proteins physically interact with DNA allows us to better understand and model their binding to DNA and their regulation of gene expression.
