Malawi is a country of some 15 million people and has long been one of Africa's most peaceful nations. A majority of the country's eastern border is consumed by the imposing Lake Malawi, which also borders Mozambique and Tanzania. Although the lake accounts for around 29% of Malawi's surface area, it is only served by one regular passenger ferry, the MV Ilala. Built in England and carried overland in small pieces from the Mozambican coast in the late 1940s, the boat has loyally served the lake and its many inhabitants since 1951. Though a beautiful ship with a certain charm, mechanical failures have prevented the Ilala from operating in recent times, highlighting the severe lack of alternative transport options on the lake. In addition, residents of outlying islands like Chizumulu and Likoma depend almost solely on the Ilala to deliver goods and supplies, and in its absence residents have been taking to the often stormy waters aboard wooden canoes. While the ship has recently returned to regular service after a ten month hiatus, the need for reliable and affordable transportation on the lake is evident.

The photos were taken in Delhi and Ajmer with sound recording in Delhi. The title comes from the ultra polite way that the station announcer started each message, but it also aplies to how I took the shots, which is somewhere between unannounced street photography and more formal portraits. The basic Indian trains don't have windows and I made use of that to get my camera right inside the carriage and close to people. Some people objected to the intrusion, some people ignored me and a few played up to the camera. A few people got angry, but just as many positively enjoyed being photographed.
