To help protect our trees from the current drought conditions in Santa Barbara and Montecito, we have developed a unique drought prevention program. We evaluate your tree for soil conditions like moisture level and ph, install organic rich mulch, standalone irrigation system where necessary, and monitor your trees condition at least monthly through the summer. This program was developed by our senior arborist, tree risk assessor, and biologist, Julie Broughton. The program is the only one of its kind here in Santa Barbara and we're looking forward to saving lots of trees!

We had a little action earlier in the week in our quiet little corner of Lakeville. Some workers from a tree trimming service got a little heated with each other on the job and nearly got into a brawl out on the street in front of a bunch of neighborhood kids. I heard the commotion from inside my garage and stepped out to have a look. By the time I whipped out my cellphone to catch a little of the action (for my blog, of course) it was winding down. One guy had had a running chainsaw that he was waving at the other guy who was brandishing a shovel. A somewhat cooler head prevailed and the chainsaw was traded out for a tree limb and before long even that was set aside. The police arrived within minutes. All the while this was going on there was one other worker up in a tree behind houses with a chainsaw apparently oblivious to the commotion out front.

Tree trimming and pruning is a dangerous occupation. Palm trees have unique risks. Inadequate or improper climbing techniques and equipment can cause fatal suffocation, falls, and electrocution. This video explains the events that led to a palm tree trimmer being suffocated by palm fronds. Photographs from the FACE fatality investigation, and news clips, are supplemented with scenes recreated by tree trimmers. The video highlights best practice climbing and trimming techniques. CDPH encourages tree care companies and trade associations to include this video as part of a comprehensive safety training program. (English, 6 min 56 sec) The video was produced by the California Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) program (www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/ohb-face) in the Occupational Health Branch of the California Department of Public Health.
