Location: Wonogiri – Central Java, Indonesia Date: 08 Oct 2014 Below the last 2 minutes of a 30 minute battle in very gusty conditions, filmed by one of the pilots on take off. It was the 2nd task of the Wonogiri XC Open, and conditions were fine on launch, albeit a touch on the windy side with 20-25 km/h winds. Task was cancelled under level 3 conditions about 25 minutes after the start. Most pilots landed in front of take off, or had already gone over the back of the mountain. I had not heard anything, and kept flying despite my radio being eerily quiet, with winds increasing to 40-50 km/h. After falling out of the last thermal at 1500m, I rapidly lost altitude with about 80m altitude over the ridge, not enough to make a run down wind for the flatlands behind and escape the inevitable rotor in the lee side. Pinned on top, inching forward on full bar I did not have enough penetration to reach a landing in front of the mountain. Getting lower very close the terrain in very turbulent and gusty conditions with no landings available. After a few collapses, 2 failed top landings on one of the few landable spots, a near riser twist and a deep stall with big ears, and stuck in the ventury, I had seen enough and decided to bail out in the trees. Got covered in a million ants, but otherwise the smoothest landing ever, not a scratch on both glider and myself. I was lucky to step out of the harness a meter of the ground, happier than ever to be on the ground! Lessons learned: - Include your radio settings in your pre flight checks, and confirm RX/TX whilst in the air. - Follow your instincts, land before conditions deteriorate and develop into a dangerous situation with escape options evaporated. - Trust your wing in all conditions and focus on the inputs it needs to keep it flying. - The old adage confirmed, “It's better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here.” - Trees are friends :-)
