This Conversation is the first of several between artists Patricia Wilson Smith, Brook Hobbins, and others, about the practical and theoretical issues around making a portrait or self-portrait. The artists are currently in residence in Who Do I Think I Am? at Gallery7 (Pie Factory,Margate) where they'll each make a new self-portrait, while addressing the pleasures and pitfalls of self-portraiture, identity as an artist, concepts of Self, the role of artists in society today, and other themes. Patricia has made an artist book 'Why I never Made It as an Artist' as a trigger for conversations with visitors and artists.

Our second Living Room was hosted in collaboration with Turner Contemporary, Margate. Beyond Ourselves: can art shape our values? featured artist Dorothy Cross, and change strategist for WWF, Tom Crompton. Tom’s interest and curiosity in how social change happens led him to write Common Cause: the case for working with our cultural values. Dorothy’s sculpture, film and photography, which showcased at Turner Contemporary, plays with the relationship of the human and the natural world. In this short film Tom and Dorothy explore what we know about values, the influences that shape them and the tensions inherent in a discussion of arts role in that process.

Ted Trimble has his own views on the controversial economic future of Margate, in Kent, U.K. In his very simple way he would like to share his thoughts with you. I created this character, Ted Trimble, a few years ago. He just seemed to come about when another project didn't get off the ground. His image is inspired by Peter Cook and Dudley Moor's alter egos famous in the 1960s. There is something of the Frederick Scuttle about him too (a character created by Benny Hill). I shot the monologue on a Sony Z1 in 1440 x 1080i high definition. The advantage is that I can get sound straight into it so I have made the whole thing single handed. It isn't easy swapping hats. For example, setting up the lighting involved me moving backwards and forwards and changing between a lighting technician and an actor. It would have been best to be one or the other. I also found my self drying up as in stage fright and it took a few attempts. The stills were taken mainly on a Canon 5D mark I. The editing took a few hours in spite of it being a three minute piece. The music and sound effects were from AKM royalty free CDs. Enough written, I think. Feel free to ask questions if you like. Enjoy!

This intimate new show from Clod Ensemble - creators of genre defying performance - has a dark, original fairy tale at its heart. 'The Red Chair' is a surreal ballad that tells the story of a man who could not stop eating, the wife doomed to cook his meals and their ‘inveesible’ daughter. Join acclaimed writer/performer Sarah Cameron as she takes you on a journey through a world of extreme compulsion and eye watering complacency, where domestic drudgery happens on an operatic scale and a father’s dereliction of duty reaches epic proportions. Told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a musical score that rolls in like the mist over the hills and a wee dram of whisky to oil the way, 'The Red Chair' lies somewhere between a Grimms’ Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children.
