An Introduction to Conversations to Dystonia - a work in progress ‘Conversations With Dystonia’ is a new dance work by Arc Dance, choreographed and performed by Artistic Director Suzie Birchwood. Suzie has the neurological condition Dystonia and is a wheelchair user. ‘Conversations’ is a trio between Suzie -a classical dancer, an aerial artist and a contemporary dancer. The piece explores Suzie’s tempestuous relationship with her condition. A preview of the piece was presented as part of Resolutions 2014. The full work will be performed as part of a double bill with Arc Dance’s debut show ‘A Sense of Beauty’ at Pavilion Dance’s Integrated Dance Summit this Spring. During March and May we will take extracts of the performance with an accompanying workshops to schools, hospitals and hospices. We are planning a further tour in Autumn 2014/Spring 2015. Full description Tranquil, delicate phases of movement are interrupted by frenzied, ungovernable protests manipulating the dancers movements into extraordinary positions with a fierce energy. This is representative of Suzie’s experience of Dystonia. Dystonia is a little known condition although not rare with at least 70,000 people in the UK affected. Dystonia affects the motor pathways in the brain that control recruitment and movement of muscles causing unwanted spasms with sustained abnormal postures or repetitive movements. Suzie’s dystonia is generalised, affecting all of the muscles in her body predominantly on the right side. It is very well controlled by botulin toxin injections every 3 months but Suzie is unable to walk or bear a significant amount of weight because of the severe effect the dystonia has on her lower body. Prior to treatment Suzie experiences severe spasms affecting all of her limbs, also her eyes and throat. Suzie has found that dance, combined with techniques including yoga and skinner release, significantly support her to manage her symptoms. The act of dancing seemingly providing an outlet for the spasms to release some of their energy and the strength and flexibility of the dancers body supporting a healthy system that can effectively repair itself after the injuries sustained during spasms. This piece demonstrates the starkly contrasting movement dynamic that dystonia presents. Two male performers partner Suzie, the aerial artist presenting a tangible expression of the dystonia while the male dancer fuses the vocabulary of a non-disabled dancer and that of a disabled dancer. The highly emotive story arc is performed on a set that can support diverse movement, providing props, struts, angles, and support suitable for counterbalancing and points around which dancers can pivot.‘Conversations With Dystonia’ is a new dance work by Arc Dance, choreographed and performed by Artistic Director Suzie Birchwood.
