1. Girl Talk

This short video piece entitled ‘Girl Talk’ focuses on female adolescent companionship and attempts to evoke feelings of nostalgia associated with being a teenage girl through girlish, dreamy moving image. The theme was sparked by a conversation I had with Avi, one of the girls featured, when she described her best friend Freya as her ‘soul mate’. I thought this characterization was so interesting and poignant. This got me reminiscing about my own teen hood and specifically my relationship with my best girl friend. We used to spend all of out time together, we began dressing the same and our expressions and language would mimic one other to the point where people thought we were twins. We also used to wrestle and play fight with each other. It would initiate as a joke but often ended up in tears and bruises. I put this down to pent up teenage aggression and also to the sheer boredom and frustration of being subjected to the conventions of countryside living. We had a very strong bond back then but as we got older we naturally drifted apart. This project has developed from work that I made last term where I took portraits of teenage girls in response to our social media saturated culture. Whilst analysing the photos I couldn’t help but notice how vulnerable and uncomfortable some of my subjects were as they posed self-consciously for me by themselves. This time I realised how much easier it was to work with girls in pairs or in groups. It was as if I wasn’t even there. This highlights the confidence and power they provide for one another. Like pack mentality. All of the dialogue is unscripted and I rarely prompted the girls to do anything. If I suggested something it was inspired by what I had seen them do earlier, like playing with each others hair, singing or lighting each others cigarettes. As well as looking at photographers like Justine Kurland, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Ryan Mc Ginley and Francesca Jane Allen I have also taken inspiration from films like The Virgin Suicides, My Summer of Love and Fish Tank. By using moving image instead of still I can allow deeper insight into how the subjects interact with one another and by shooting each frame in a still format the film can be read as a series of moving photographs rather than something that contains a tangible narrative. I admired the ease in which the girls remained in each other’s company. When bored they are comforted by one another. They don’t require a social pretense. No words need be exchanged. They are content in silence. Or they simply invent ways of entertaining themselves. The intimacy of their friendship can often seem ambiguous; their closeness is gender and age specific. Social constructs mean it’s uncommon to witness teenage boys displaying affections for one another and behaving in the same way as girls do. Fathers may not understand the affinity shared between their daughters and their friends. Their girl-ness is often a world apart. I observed how much of their interactions are physical and note how this changes and becomes less apparent with age. I chose to shoot in untouched natural areas in an effort to construct a serene utopia that represents a teen girl Eden. A place where they could remain young away from anything that may interfere or hinder their experience. It is an acknowledgement to the wonders and complexities of teen friendship and girl hood, whilst being a sentimental and personal response to my own nostalgia of youth.

New Weapons is a collaboration between BLITZ and Central Saint Martins University of the Arts London. New Weapons is an exploration of the proliferation of the networked image in an online environment, and the idea that an image can be in many places simultaneously: on your smartphone and your laptop, in Europe and Asia, on Google and Facebook. In short that there is no original, only versions. New Weapons is the first exhibition worldwide to fully embrace the photographic concept of the network by existing in multiple versions in multiple locations. This collective is operating in terrain that understands the visual image in philosophical terms – multi-dimensional, process-driven and defragmented – in short, beyond a linear rhetoric of content, measurement and description. These artists’ work experiments with sound, video, data feeds and sculpture, which collectively indicate the complex terrain of the visual image which they are investigating.
