We are very pleased to present to you, Episode Eight of Giants of The Forest, with Vancouver’s Hey Ocean! It was chilly and breezy on that cliff overhanging the ocean as the sun was setting, but we didn’t really mind it because we got to listen to some happy harmonies. We’ve been hoping to do a Giants Of The Forest video with these lovely people right from the beginning, so we’re really thankful to have had this opportunity, and get to know these sweet sweet hearts. We got to film a video for Dave Vertesi last year, and we even filmed a special duet with Ashleigh this February too. This is the first time we got to hang out with Dave, Dave, & Ashleigh all together as Hey Ocean! and we hope it’s not the last. Enjoy this NEW song from them called “Big Blue Wave” from their album they’re currently working on, and prepare to catch yourself singing this to yourself many times today, or singing it really loud. Why not? And if this video makes you think, “I would love to hang out near the ocean and trees and listen to them play live” well you totally can! They’re playing at Summer Live this July 10th in Stanley Park as part of the celebrations for Vancouver’s 125th birthday. Much love to you Hey Ocean! www.facebook.com/iloveheyocean www.heyocean.com Filmed with a Canon 5D Mark II www.giantsoftheforest.com www.amazingfactory.com Photos from the shoot by Elissa Crowe below! and here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/amazingfactory/sets/72157626744134956/

www.ravishingbeasts.com A chat with Rachel Poliquin about her book "The Breathless Zoo: Taxidermy and the Cultures of Longing". From the publisher: From sixteenth-century cabinets of wonders to contemporary animal art, The Breathless Zoo: Taxidermy and the Cultures of Longing examines the cultural and poetic history of preserving animals in lively postures. But why would anyone want to preserve an animal, and what is this animal-thing now? Rachel Poliquin suggests that taxidermy is entwined with the enduring human longing to find meaning with and within the natural world. Her study draws out the longings at the heart of taxidermy—the longing for wonder, beauty, spectacle, order, narrative, allegory, and remembrance. In so doing, The Breathless Zoo explores the animal spectacles desired by particular communities, human assumptions of superiority, the yearnings for hidden truths within animal form, and the loneliness and longing that haunt our strange human existence, being both within and apart from nature. Rachel Poliquin is a writer and curator engaged with the cultural and poetic history of the natural world. She has curated taxidermy exhibits for the Museum of Vancouver and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at the University of British Columbia. Poliquin is the author of www.ravishingbeasts.com, a website dedicated to exploring the cultural history of taxidermy. The Breathless Zoo is available from Penn State University Press.
