              • 'Home Grown, the story of UK Hip Hop': exhibition launch night - documentary news item.

                04:49

                from Martin Jones Added 2,201 6 2

Photos featuring the early days of UK Hip Hop 1983-89 can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4709&id=100000268605982&l=0b8cd6ff09 and http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=6053&id=100000268605982&l=2d1d11a346 As our first assignment, fellow students from Dudley College's Access to Media course and I filmed events at the launch night party for the UK Hip Hop exhibition at Urbis Gallery in Manchester on Wednesday 14 October 2009. Curated by James McNally and Urbis's Andy Brydon, the show takes the visitor through a time tunnel that begins with the earliest days of UK Hip Hop. DJ Doctor Funk of Aston FM (Aeon Anderson) presents this short documentary news item, conducting a whistle-stop tour of the seven eras of UK Hip Hop featured in the show, with particular emphasis on the 80s. In those days Doctor Funk was a well known rapper on the scene. He used to organise coaches that took the early hip hoppers to All Dayers throughout the country, and later formed the Tuff Groove Sound System who played out to countless parties around Birmingham and further afield. So he is an ideal person to talk about those times. Crew member Adele Robinson wraps up the journey through the eras, bringing us up to date with the most recent exponents of Hip Hop: Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk and Dizzee Rascal. Also seen is Debbie Pryce of the Cookie Crew, one of the true success stories of UK Hip Hop from the 80s era and Normski who photographed the developing scene. (Sadly I haven't yet edited the full interview with Debbie, which was great.) I went back to college as a mature student in autumn 2009. My background is that I organised the first ever UK outdoor Hip Hop festival in August 1984 at Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham; I was agent for breakdancers the Wolverhampton B Boys and Coventry's Future Shock and managed Goldie first as a breakdancer, then as a graffiti artist. I also organised the big Goldie/3D/New York TATs crew graffiti art exhibition in Birmingham in 1987. Film crew credits: Adele Robinson, Matt Bullows, Leander Bradley. Thanks all of you. It was a special night, a true team effort and everyone really gave it their all. I'll miss all of you. Many thanks to Andy Brydon of Urbis for allowing us to film his very comprehensive exhibition, to James McNally for his shots of the exhibition and his great expertise in researching the history of UK Hip Hop, and to Dudley College's technical facilitator Jonathan Roberts for his expertise and support teaching us the complexities of editing in the Apple Final Cut Pro program. Finally thank you to Doctor Funk, a good friend and fantastic presenter whose knowledge of the scene and extrovert personality turned our first assignment into a very special, memorable experience. The show is planned to continue till Feb 2010, when very sadly Urbis shuts its doors before becoming the National Football Museum. Quite what vestiges of this great innovative gallery will remain after the transformation is anybody's guess. I'm certain that very very few galleries would or could show such an exhibition as Home Grown: we're losing something priceless here. So go and see the show while you can! Apologies for the annoying watermark at the start and finish of the video - as a temporary solution to convert to a usable format, I used free software to convert from DVD to avi, which leaves a watermark - I'll replace the film when I get the MPEG4 version. Also apologies for the rogue missing frame in the middle of the film - the vagaries of the Final Cut Pro editing program "that randomly disassociates itself from previously uploaded clips and replaces them with a red nothingness" is to blame here!
