SHIFT provides financial solutions to unbanked women around the world via group savings and mobile money. Through their fundraising platform, individuals can connect, collaborate, and support groups of women by sending capital directly to them. They invest explicitly in women to maximize impact and create a flow of positive outcomes from improvements in health and education to reductions in crime and corruption. Women living in poverty are the best money managers; they are just rewiring the system to put that capital directly in their hands. Violence and displacement surrounded those in Northern Uganda for over two decades as the Lords Resistance Army wreaked havoc town to town. Over 500,000 people were killed throughout Uganda with 65,000 deaths in the Northern region alone. The adverse effects of the recently ended conflict have made lasting impact in communities throughout Northern Uganda. The war massacred thousands and left families devastated. In many households women are widowed or men suffer from alcoholism leaving women throughout communities to manage everything. Whether the impact of the conflict or not, women of Uganda are still forced into traditional gender roles and are threatened by gender discrimination, especially in rural areas. Women run the households and businesses, yet their husbands dictate what they can and can’t do. The majority of women in rural poverty work as subsistence farmers with days that see no end and improvement that rarely comes. A typical day involves digging from dusk till dawn and preparing one meal consisting of vegetables from her farm for herself and her children. Despite all their hardships and barriers they face, the women of Uganda still have hope. These are the women of our future. They are fearless. They are resilient. And they will stop at nothing to improve their lives and their children’s lives. But as history has shown us, they can’t get there alone. The forces surrounding continue to hold them down. Now is her time. She has the power to make a difference. Support the women of Uganda and see what she is capable of. Help us SHIFT the balance of power today at shiftwomen.com SHIFTING the way we support women in poverty
