2 Samuel 9 – David has just come from a reflective period of calm, perhaps he thought of his relationship with Jonathan, lost in battle, and about Saul. He thought of his promise and asked if there is anyone left from Saul’s household that he can show kindness to (v.1). The translation of kindness was something was deeper than that. The original Hebrew word should be translated “grace”. Positive and unconditional acceptance of the person, a demonstration of love that is undeserved, unearned and unrepayable. Verse 3 in the AMP says “Is there someone of the house of Saul to whom I may show the (unfailing, unsought, unlimited) mercy and kindness of God.” Why did David want to do that? He had made 2 covenant promises to Jonathan and then Saul (1 Samuel 20v13-17/1 Samuel 24v20-22). These need to be seen in the context of the time and David’s destiny to be King. It was the custom of eastern dynasties when a new King took over, all family members of previous dynasty were exterminated to take away the possibility of revolt. So, Jonathan had good reason to make his request of David...”But show me unfailing kindness like that of the Lord as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family – not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David...” (1 Sam.20v14-16) He was asking that the lives of his family be spared, take care of us and protect us. Not forgotten. David agreed without hesitation. Secondly at cave of Adullam, David swore to Saul not to cut off his descendants. In scripture there was no greater sign of commitment and loyalty than a covenant. This promise went against culture and custom and marked the depth of friendship and commitment David felt for Jonathan and even Saul who pursued his life. So here, David asked if there was ANYONE to be a recipient of his grace – unqualified acceptance based on unconditional love.

Perfection: What is spiritual maturity? Our pre-supposition is that perfection is doing the right thing in the right way. However perfection means fully mature; accepting and living in the agape love that grows us. We all have pre-suppositions that compel, drive and control our secular and religious life. Maturity is the ability to maneuver around or through the ones that impede us. The mature Christian is free to live by principles rather than impulses, reaction or feelings. They learn to live by faith in Christ alone for their salvation. Their hope is in God’s ability to complete everything that needs to be done in their life. They realize that God has freely poured into their heart His agape unconditional love that has set them free to see others from God’s point of view.

This is a video montage celebrating the life of my mother, Mrs. Bobbie Thompson Humphrey. She battled pancreatic cancer for 5 years, before transitioning from this life. I wanted to put something together which showed the true essence of her spirit, her character, her loves, and her purpose on this earth....And they all centered around her family. She is missed, she is loved, and will forever be cherished.
