Finally, an updated demo reel! Here are some of the things I've been creating this past year - yes, including when I did the Disney Internship last summer :) And as always, both Traditional and CG Animation have a very special place in my heart. Also planning to build a new Flash reel too. This is my final semester so I can pretty much consider this my graduation (undergrad) demo reel from AAU. Hope you like it & thank you for watching! :) Reel Breakdown: 1) “Magee dialog test” – I did the entire animation. Magee Rig from Disney’s 'Prep & Landing' show and props provided by WDAS. Property of WDAS. 2) “Red pushed out in the cold” – I did the entire animation. Shot from our Disney Summer Associate program’s short film 'Red Riding Hood'. Red rig by Mara McMahon and modeling/props by Josh Carroll. Snow FX by Etienne Metois. Property of WDAS. 3) “The Androg plays fetch” – pencil test sequence: close-up and wide shot. I did both Traditional + CG animation and character design. Cannon rig from Turbosquid and rocket model/rig by Kiel Figgins. Sound FX by Craig Northrop. 4) “The kiss” – CG sequence. I did the entire animation and character design/modification. Both characters are the Morpheus rig by Josh Burton. 5) “Just a little grape” – I did the entire animation and character design/modification. Norman rig provided by the Academy of Art University. WIP. 6) “If I was a monster” – pencil test dialog sequence. I did the entire animation and character designs. Voices by myself and Craig Northrop. 7) “The cat bowl” – CG medium shot. How do you make an artist? At The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in Manhattan, artist Josephine Halvorson guides an undergraduate painting class in a group critique. The student work ranges from letterform-inspired abstractions to painterly landscapes to intensely graphic narrative scenes on shaped canvases. The paintings are the culmination of a semester’s worth of work. On guard against the students’ tendency to respond to an artist’s words as much as their work, Halvorson explains her particular critique process: “The students give feedback without the artist over-determining it initially by what they say about it.” Her students’ comments are wide-ranging, off the cuff, and at times sharply critical. One student wonders if a densely iconographic set of paintings is an “allegorical overload,” challenging the viewer to give up on ever getting a clear understanding. For this student, the moment is poignant. This set of critiques will be one of few remaining opportunities to hear so consistently and variously from her artist-peers. Once out of school, she knows she’ll struggle to find similar chances for feedback. A Cooper Union alumna herself, Halvorson remembers the anxiety of her own undergraduate group critique experiences and the feeling of never producing work worthy of review. Art education—premised on the hope of training someone to do a seemingly untrainable creative act—is a necessarily tricky, contradictory endeavor. But for Halvorson, group critique, with its possibility of open dialogue and exchange, is one of art school’s truly constructive models for learning. Josephine Halvorson (b. 1981, Brewster, Massachusetts) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
