Hostilities in South Sudan are now into their second year. The political situation remains fragile and the humanitarian outlook is grim. Millions are food insecure, with 2.5 million severely so. Thousands of children suffer from malnutrition. Aid agencies have appealed for US$1.81 billion to respond to humanitarian needs in 2015. $600 million is needed by the end of February for the dry season, which lasts until May. Until then, aid agencies can take advantage of access by road to reach more people in need and preposition supplies to enable us to deliver lifesaving and livelihood assistance later in the year when the roads become impassable again. The crisis has also had a regional impact. Approximately 490,000 South Sudanese have fled the country since the outbreak of hostilities, with more expected to flee this year. An additional $810 million is needed in 2015 for the South Sudan Refugee Response Plan. On 9 February 2015, a high-level meeting in Nairobi hosted jointly by the UN and IGAD (the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in Eastern Africa) provided an opportunity to mobilize funding and agree on actions needed to ensure continued humanitarian access and protection of civilians.

Close to 2 million people were displaced. UN agencies, governments and NGO’s are working tireslessly to manage influx of refugees fleeing South Sudan, into neighbouring Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. UNHCR and its humanitarian partners in the four countries launched an emergency appeal on 17 December 2014 for some US$ 800 million, in order to meet the immediately needs of the refugees and also in aticipation of a surge in the number expected accross the boarders as a result of an expected famine in South Sudan. Script The year 2014 saw millions of South Sudanese on the move...fleeing a conflict that erupted one year ago. The speed and intensity of the war’s spread throughout the young nation caught the world by surprise. Since last December, more than 2 Million children, women and men have been uprooted from their homes. Close to 500,000 refugees poured into neighbouring countries. Many walked for days - or months to reach to safety in neighbouring countries of asylum - arriving hungry, dehydrated and scared. Most of the arrivals are children ..... Nearly 70% under the age of 18. Almost 35,000 South Sudanese children have fled without their parents and relatives. It is estimated that around 12,000 children have been recruited or have been used by armed groups. It has been called a “children’s crisis,”...leading to another lost generation. Khan Malual understands this better than most. He fled the last war over a decade ago to Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya ... He was 9 years-old and alone. He returned home in 2007, hopeful that his country had finally found peace. But now he is back in Kakuma.
