This reflection is from the service entitled, "The Medicine of Sacred Rhythms, Sacred Songs," led by Suzanna Stone. From the service description: "The rhythm and songs from within are your heart-songs made audible for the world to hear. In this empowering service we will cover the basics of drumming while learning the intricacies of drumming in a group. Through traditional West African rhythms we will explore the drum as a healing extension of the spirit. We will learn and sing simple yet sacred songs to re-connect us to the beauty and spirit found within and all around."

This sermon was delivered on March 9, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus, Indiana by its Intern Minister, Shari Woodbury. It was based on Michelle Alexander's bestselling book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (The New Press: New York, 2012). A book discussion group in Columbus will focus on our nation's destructive incarceration problem, its history and origins, racial aspects, and how to change it. The group will meet three times, every other Wednesday, on these dates: March 26, April 9, and April 23. Join us from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus (UUCCI), 7850 Goeller Boulevard. Appropriate for ages sixteen through the Sage Stage. Facilitated by Shari Woodbury. The book is available from Viewpoint Books in downtown Columbus, with a 10% discount if you indicate you plan to participate in the discussion group. The New Jim Crow can also be ordered online, including e-book versions. To register or for questions, please contact Shari (intern.uucci@gmail.com). Registration by March 17 is helpful, but not absolutely required. All interested community members are welcome.

This reflection is titled "Unitarian Worship, Nature and the Environment," and was given by UUBRidge member, Ian Fitzsimmons. Thoughtful attention to the environment fits into UU principles and worship as a core element, in part because of the key role nature has played in worship since early human societies have existed, in part because of the contribution made by studies of nature to the rationalism that helps distinguish Unitarian worship, and, finally, because of the changing role of human society to the natural world in contemporary times. A focus on interaction between society and its environment also provides a natural pathway to consideration of interaction among societal groups, including fairness and justice.
