"Starting from small things", motto of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, we begin to grasp the view of a man's goal to "recover the traditional Japanese building." From philosophy of nature and materiality to personal taste in film and music, Kuma travels to San Diego to share his influences and insight on the world of architecture with design students from Woodbury School of Architecture. http://architecture.woodbury.edu/ http://kkaa.co.jp/ Directed, Filmed, & Edited by Omar Kakar

Tony Slinger, a bespoke shoe maker spares his time to speak about his career history and the traditional methods used for producing some of Yorkshires finest leather shoes. Tony is the last remaining bespoke shoe maker in all of Yorkshire, working with clients from all over the United Kingdom, sourcing his leather goods from J & FJ Baker and Co Ltd Working with Tony was a fantastic experience and helped me greatly in developing my story telling skills for future projects. This film was produced as part of a 3rd year University module in which we were given the openness to produce anything that we wanted. I spent several months looking for contacts until Tony was generous enough to provide his time. I hope that you enjoy the video and the story that Tony has to tell, thank you. Avalanche: Individual project created in 8 weeks using Houdini, Nuke and PFTrack. The effect was created using two layers of particle simulations and a layer of Houdini Pyro simulation. Compositing was done in Nuke. OSCAR: Group project created in 7 weeks using Houdini, Nuke and PFTrack. I created a feather asset to procedurally create and animate different kinds of feathers. This was used together with particle simulations to create the pillow explosion scenes. Compositing was done in Nuke Flood: Individual project created using Maya, RealFlow, Krakatoa, Nuke and PFTrack. The water was simulated in RealFlow. It was then rendered using Krakatoa with custom mapping for colours and reflections based on vorticity. Compositing was done in Nuke. AI Ant crowd simulator: This Python script was written in 2 weeks, and is able to simulate crowds of ants using simple AI. The ants are aware of each other, have energy levels, and can have certain behaviour set to them. Their legs are moved individually depending on where each agent wants to go, meaning their legs will move in a realistic way and never slide. I did not model the ant. Prospective, pragmatic and experimental, this Bachelor course is provided in the framework of the Visual Communication Department, which concurrently offers crossover courses and projects enabling students to acquire multidisciplinary skills (photography, interaction design, film). Through courses and workshops provided by major actors on the international scene, the students apprehend the various fields of graphic design such as editorial design, typography, illustration, or brand identity and art direction. Involvement in exhibitions, publications or assignments commissioned by institutions provides an actual immersion into the labour world. The students also benefit from a wide range of theoretical courses and multidisciplinary conferences on the ECAL premises. The skills and projects acquired throughout the curriculum serve to produce a portfolio of the highest professional standards. Whether they aim to become graphic designer, typographer or art director, either self-employed or working for a company, students who train at ECAL have a wide range of opportunities to choose from when they complete their CV.
